Nicki Minaj is probably celebrating her newly signed record deal over at Young Money with Lil Wayne, but over here at GIANT we’re wondering is this what the female rap game has come to?
Nicki Minaj a.k.a Nicki “the Ninja” isn’t trash, she can spit some bars but she isn’t gold. She charges lyrics to the game like “Imma spit on it, then imma sit on it, you can f*ck my girl too daddy imma condone it,” but doesn’t rap deserve so much more?
Nowadays female rappers are as rare in the biz as platinum albums. Where are the baddest b*tches at when you need them? I purposely skipped all the mc/singers like Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill. I also passed on all geriatric MC’s like MC Lyte, and Salt & Pepa (no disrespect) but there’s no reason why the females listed shouldn’t be rapping. If Jay can be 40 and do it, so can they…
Take a look at the list…

Whenever the conversation arises about femcees, Lil’ Kim‘s name will be mentioned, period! Kim’s debut album Hard Core (1996) crossed and broke every boundary that society set on a female: going certified double platinum, featuring collabos with the late great Notorious B.I.G and Jay- Z. While other femcees can’t go gold, Kim has gone platinum on three consecutive LPs.
Lil Kim is the first female rapper to ever receive the “5 Mics” rating from the Source Magazine for her fourth album The Naked Truth. In 2005 she went to jail on counts of conspiracy and perjury for lying to a Federal grand jury. Since her return home Kim hasn’t made much noise in the music world, leaving the flood gates open, but no one has yet to top her status.

Last Seen: Jail for violating probabtion.
Foxy Brown was known for her tough voice and raunchy lyrics. She dropped the Ill Nana (1996) and in three months it went certified platinum. Her constant rivalry with Lil’ Kim landed them side by side in the Source Magazine. Like Kim, Foxy’s first three albums went certified platinum. The legal troubles started in 1997 when she spat on her neighbor. Since then she has been in and out of court six times. The last incident put her in jail for a year. With her rekindled friendship with Jay-Z maybe we can get her to return to the spotlight for another album.
When Fat Joe came out with “Lean Back” people could care less about his verse. It was Remy’s “Like my necklace, started relaxin’ now, that’s what the **** I call a chain reaction” that had everyone singing off key in the club. Reminisce didn’t grow up in the best environment which brought so much truth and rawness to her lyrics. Her album There’s Something about Remy: Based on a True Story did little in stores but scored the respect from both female and male rappers. In 2007 Remy was brought up on charges for shooting a friend over $3,000. She was later sentenced to eight years in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. Hopefully she’ll write some songs while she’s locked up, that way when she comes home we can get another Rmy Ma album.

Trina strolled onto the scene in 1998 on the track “Nann Nigga” with Trick Daddy. Thanks to the popularity of the song it gained Trina a deal on Slip-N-Slide Records and took her out her the world of exotic dancing. She released “Da Baddest Bitch” in 2000 which went certified gold. Trina came out with mediocre lyrics but incredible swag. She embodied the spirit of Lil’ Kim with bars like “You know lil’ mama ain’t with that quick sh*t. You better break me off stiff tongue or stiff d*ck.” In 2005, she released her first fragrance called Diamond Princess named after her second studio album. She is currently working on television show that will premier in late 2009, but what about an album?

Like Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown, Eve‘s first three albums have gone multi-platinum. Eve has had an extremely successful rap career. She was once apart of DMX’s Ruff Ryder’s group, then went solo in 1999. Her biggest single to date “Love Is Blind” was dedicated to her friend and addressed the issue of domestic violence. Eve appeared in xXx, both Barbershop 1 and 2, The Cookout, and The Woodsman. She starred in the UPN television sitcom, Eve, as a fashion designer named Shelly. Acting is cool and all, but when will she return to the game?

Shawnna got her start in a female rap duo called Infamous Syndicate with an album, Changing the Game, in 1999. With little success they were dropped from their label. In 2000 Ludacris picked her up as a solo act. She appeared on his debut song “What’s Your Fantasy?” Shawnna’s debut album Worth tha Weight was released on September 28, 2004. It lacked the promotion it needed to be a successful and, in turn, it flopped. The album was well-received by critics. Shawnna’s second album Block Music was released on June 27, 2006. It didn’t do well either. Shawnna and Ludacris have been working on a Battle Of The Sexes album for some time now. If we’re lucky Shawnna will get a shot back at the limelight.
Maybe these on the come-up female MC’s can bring back what the games been missing…
