So, Mariah Carey’s album released yesterday. WTF?! Yeah I don’t even think she knew. That leads us to think about other slept on R&B albums. We all have them, the albums that we put on and let play from beginning to end. They make us cry, smile, reflect and sometimes, even horny. The LP’s are so good that you want to single-handily buy a million copies so they can go platinum. You may ask what are the requirements for being labeled a slept on album, so here they are:
1. The artist’s other albums outshined the one that made this list.
2.No one bought the album.
3.No one knew about it to buy the album.

These following albums are at the top of my list, how about yours?

9.Dangerously In Love- Beyonce:

The BEST Beyonce album ever! Forget that gimmicky “Put A Ring On It.” Dangerously In Love was pure R&B without the raunchiness, and the scam. You could make love to these tracks all night, wake up in the morning and bump it while cleaning the house. Great Stuff!

8.Rated Next:- Next

If you don’t know about Next then you’ve been listening to mainstream radio too long. Next came out with “Hard For Me.” Still don’t remember? Well, download a little something called “Butta Love” and “Taste So Good.”

7.Pandemonium- B2K:

Ok, bear with me here. B2K may have been teeny-boppers, but lyrics, looks and voices transcend age groups. Listen to track number 8- ”Everything,” let it marinate, then let the entire CD play from beginning to end.

6.Unpredictable-Jamie Foxx:

Jamie Foxx is hilarious, handsome, a thespian and a father. How could he not he make a popping R&B album? He’s been singing and playing the piano since the Jamie Foxx Show. Unpredictable is the perfect title. He let loose some guaranteed panty-droppers. Listen to “Do What It Do…”

5.Lessons In Love-Lloyd

You would think after the hit “You” that Lloyd would be on his way to stardom, but the limelight shines dimly on him. Lessons In Love is a beautiful smooth album. He may not be the oldest, but his lessons were just as good as any old timer. Listen to “Year Of The Lover.”

4.Ashanti-Ashanti

Ashanti may not be the best singer, but she can write her a** off. And, that was enough to create an album older women and youngsters would love. With songs like “Foolish,” “Movies” and “Happy,” the album brought back a vibe that was missing at the time of its release.

ashanti-april_02_09

3.One In A Million- Aaliyah

First and foremost, R.I.P Aaliyah, and thank you for such a lovely album. Her vocals were angelic and her style was unforgettable. In this transition album from tom-boy to sex symbol, Aaliyah set the standard high for R&B females. She could dance and make hits. Listen to “One In A Million.”

oneinamillion

2.100% Ginuwine- Ginuwine

Ginufine, I mean Ginuwine is more than a sexy face. His voice is sensual, smooth, and strong. He isn’t flamboyant or prissy, he’s a manly man with the 6-pack to prove it. This is one of the greatest R&B albums of all time (Yeah I said it!). Play every song from beginning to end. Pay attention to “All Nite All Day.”

1. Where I Wanna Be- Donell Jones

If you you haven’t heard “Where I Wanna Be,” then you have been living under the ugliest rock ever. You can not call yourself an R&B lover if you haven’t heard this. Pull up a chair and just listen to the instruments of his soul and his unique voice, and the beats and lyrics. You’ll be shocked that artists even dare come out with the blasphemy they do now!

I think one more album needs to be added to this list, Wayne Brady’s A Long Time Coming was a very hot CD and I was surprised. Many people sleep on him because he was on white TV shows such as Who’s Line is it Anyways and The Drew Carey Show and he had that talk show for awhile but this dude can really sing. I would suggest buying this album and you will be just as surprised as I was.

HOW IN THE HELL ARE THESE “SLEPT ON” CD’S???!!! ALMOST EVERYONE OF THEM WERE PLATINUM OR MULTI-PLATINUM BEST SELLERS…..THEY GOT ALL KINDS OF AIRPLAY AND CHARTED HIGH ON BILLBOARD SO WHY ARE THEY ON THIS LIST? ESPECIALLY BEYONCE, SHE SOLD OVER 5 MILLION AND WON 5 GRAMMYS SO WHY IS SHE EVEN MENTIONED? I’LL TELL U WHAT WAS REALLY SLEPT ON KOFFEE BROWN “VENUS/MARS” 2001, THAT WAS A CLASSIC THAT GOT NO LOVE AT ALL!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kashak83/ kashak83

I agree with this list but I’d have to add Jazmine Sullivan and Christette Michelle’s second Cd…I mean you can put those both in and enjoy them from beginning to end

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KNOW-LEJ/ KNOW-LEJ

Next, Donnell Jones and Unpredictable no doubt but the rest got mad radio play. Don’t forget about Intro and a couple older groups were that were tight as hell were The Whitehead Brothers and UNV. If you don’t remember them or know them lookin up and check them out.

    Ok how bout this….

9 – Razah “Razah ” – His album is not so easy to find but if you do, listen to him, he’s like an underground Musiq Soulchild.

8 – Amerie “All I Have” Not many people know how good this album is…it’s very soothing…at least to me

7 – Noel Gourdin “After My Time” – He has a smooth that reminds me of D’Angelo…long story short, go get his album…you won’t be sorry.

6 – Heather Headley “In My Mind” – The woman has a very powerful voice, think of her as a calmer version of Rihanna.

5 – Anjulie “Anjulie” – For a new artist, she has a very calm, hypnotic, Nelly Furtado-ish voices, she was a favorite of mine from jump.

4 – Keke Palmer “So Uncool” – Now, now, before yall jump to conclusions, this girl has surprised me many times, she may be young but her voice is amazing.

3 – Lyfe Jennings “Lyfe Change” – Not much needs to be said about him. The man is the epitome of real life. He’s in a league of his own.

2 – Chrisette Michele “I Am” – She, like the others on my list is very underrated. Many may not know but she’s the meaning of beautiful music.

1 – Maiysha “This Much Is True” – So many of her haven’t heard of her but her voice is so powerful, it got her a Grammy nomination with almost no promotion. She is an underground Whitney Houston, watch out for her.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Arrielle2007/ Arrielle2007

I think one of the best albums that was slept on was Destiny’s Child album, The Writing’s on the Wall. You could blast that entire album on repeat all day.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

Who said that these were “slept on”??? The only ones that are UNDERrated would be Next, Donnell Jones & LLoyd (perhaps Ginuwine). The rest of them received commercial or world renowned success. Bettaholla, THANK YOU for acknowledging Amel Larrieux…she is truly slept on. Beautiful girl & amazing talent :). Can I go ahead and add Floetry and D’Angelo (BROWN SUGAR) to this list???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

U can officially flush this list down the toilet *FLUSH*

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mizs2hot4tv/ mizs2hot4tv

yea that ginuwine is the one still

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ClippaChick/ ClippaChick

I would say any Floetry album, Mint Condition album, Chrisette Michele album and Lloyd’s second album. Now those were slept on…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sunnid94/ sunnid94

Some of these I wouldnt consider “slept on” but whatever. i think Goapele needs to be on this list. Her “change it all” CD was FIRE!!! It’s def slept on because it never gets mentioned on these type of lists and when i say her name people are always like “um who???”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SweetPeachK/ SweetPeachK

I couldn’t agree with this list more! I loved them all. One other slept on album is Brandy’s Never Say Never!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

Almost all of Donnell jones albums were slept on. To me he has one of the greatest voices of our generation. “My Heart” and the album “Life goes on” are classics…I mean I dont know another artist who could channel stevie wonder and Michael Jackson vocally and stylistically.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ms_nikki_foxx/ ms_nikki_foxx

Okay…Wayne Brady…for real…I have one for everybody…Jesse Powell “Jesse”…that was a very nice CD that got slept on for real….I was at a concert he did and he told me about it…so I waited for it and i got it…one it definately didn’t get promoted by the label like it should…you should really check it out….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

As far as Ginuwine goes 100% was his most critically acclaimed album I would have put The Life or even The senior as slept on albums. I dont remember the bachelor other than Pony.

Also a personal favorite of mine was Ceelo Green and his perfect imperfections. An awesome album that was a mix of rap and experimental soul. I believe ceelo dident receive much mainstream success but I think the album was a classic and an introduction to his alter ego Gnarls Barkley. Oh and the dude could rap better than most MC’s.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

Also Case. Missing you was an amazing album…if you liked it check out “The black rose experience”

And Im gonna say Tank: Sex, Love and Pain was so slept on but it was in my opinion one of the best R&B releases of the last 5-10 years.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/talentedartist/ talentedartist

    10. Chrisette Michele – first & second cd – She has a beautiful voice and she is very underrated.

    9. Michael Jackson- Past, Present, Future Book 1-This 2 cd set had the best of both worlds..old & new hits from the greatest entertainer ever and it almost became unnoticed..his anger was so built up from the media never giving him a break..worth every penny!! Rest In Peace

    8. Mariah Carey Charmbracelet -This is such a HOT album but no one ever bothered to take noticed because of the media ripping her apart for doing the movie Glitter..Still one of the Greatest.

    7. Janet Jackson 20 yrs -Not her best album but their were some good songs on there to dance to.

    6. Aaliyah – self titled -from beginning to end was a wonderful piece of work…u can see the growth and her maturity come alive on each and every song..Gone too soon..Rest In Peace

    6. 702- self titled -this album was HOT…too bad it didn’t get the attention it deserved

    5. SWV New Beginning -These girls have such a beautiful range and its too bad they broke up

    4. Life Jennings first CD -this one is one of the hottest and he is so very talented

    3. Mariah Carey- Memoirs of an imperfect angel – this is one of her greatest ever..I bought it the day after it came out and I haven’t stopped playing it since…she can never do wrong with her talent

    2. Brandy- Never Say Never -one of the best ever..I still continue to rock to this one and its one of her greatest

    1. Brandy- Human -this is the most underrated one to date…not only was this an incredible album it was also emotional..if you are going through emotional times..this one will help u get though it and u will understand that u r not alone..no need to question Brandy’s talent..she has the most unique voice ever!!

Not it at all, case, every album slept on-intro got really slept on,htown never gets mentioned anymore, and my dudes men at large…come on really slept on,every track u could bump and grind to,lucky I can’t think of the others right now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aadouble/ aadouble

Oh my dude from jodeci- Mr dalvins album pure classic.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Chokolatesoul/ Chokolatesoul

Most these albums were by no means “slept on”. Whoever wrote this article must be super young or extra tuned into the radio. Please see:Anthony David’s “Acey Duecy” and that is by no means the man’s first album. Bilal’s “First Born Second” You can play that joint front to back no skip. Noel Gourdin’s “After My Time” That song ” The River” strikes a cord in my soul. Emily King “East Side Story” That half sista has soul! Jazmine Sullivan “Fearless” I mean did yall here “Need U Bad” or did yall have cotton in your ears. The sista is the second coming of Lauryn! Leelah James is slept on too. He voice is something like a throw back.Ryan Leslie’s album was also a pleasant surprise. Kevin Michael is pretty decent too. Anything Musiq Soulchild is underrated as well. Any Dwele album. Solange Knowles’ “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams was an awesome cd too. Let me stop because my list will go on.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Virtuous_Woman_86/ Virtuous_Woman_86

Wayne Brady really can sing, he was on Steve Harvey Morning show as a guest host, brother has skills!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AntiFeminization/ AntiFeminization

Wayne Brady can blow over some tracks. I was shocked. That high hairline has nothing on his voice.

    * After 7 – “Reflections” (1995)
    – Jon B produced a couple of tracks on this album. The producer from another slept-on group called Yours Truly produced three good slow jams on this album.

    * Yours Truly – Truly Yours (1991)
    – This has to be one of the greatest R&B albums in the last 20 years. “Gonna Miss The One”, “Hold Me”, “All Of Me” *has NYC-make-love-to-me-in-the-summer-time beat

    * Sunshine Anderson – Your Woman (2001)
    – Even though I like her 2007 “Sunshine At Midnight” album when I re-arranged the order of the songs to make it sound tighter, Mike City outdone himself on the beat machines. “You Do You (I’ll Do Me)” should have been a single making the Top 10 R&B singles; “Where Have You Been”, “He Said, You Said” had a hot beat with a nice Moog lead on it. Best Mike City produced album ever.

    * Kelis – Kaleidoscope (1999)
    – The best Kelis album ever and some of the best work that Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo/Neptunes has ever produced.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE SLEPT-ON R&B ALBUMS!!!!! I GOT A MYRIAD OF THEM AND I WILL LIST A LOT OF THEM!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/musikluva007/ musikluva007

MOST DEFINITELY CAN AGREE WITH NUMBER 2. THAT WAS GINUWINE’S BEST ALBUM!!!!! STILL BUMP IT IN MY CAR LIKE ITS A BRAND NEW CD!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AntiFeminization/ AntiFeminization

    5. THE LIFE [2001] by Ginuwine was soooooooo slept on.

It’s Ginuwine’s most mature and best slow jams to date. G-wine can make slow songs, but he outdone himself on 2001′s THE LIFE.

    6. DAVINA – BEST OF BOTH WORDS [1998]

Not only was she an audio engineer formerly of Loud Records, but she produced her own album. Hot Hip-Hop-Soul that would even make Mary J. Blige jealous.

    7. BRIAN McKNIGHT – SUPERHERO [2001]

If Motown Records paid attention to this album more, he could have not 4 but SEVEN HIT SINGLES of of that album easily. Dude is nasty.

    8. ROBIN THICKE – EVOLUTION OF ROBIN THICKE [2006]

Even the bonus tracks could have been singles! Nuff said.

    9. SONS OF FUNK – THE GAME OF FUNK [1998]

These cats were the only R&B group under Master P’s No Limit Kingdom back in the day. Fiya-ass slow jams. They made mid-tempos but shined on the slow stuff.

    10. MERCERDES – REAR END [1999]

This album was pushed back a couple of times and finally dropped in ’99. I love the slow songs on this album. She’s a trick for making dude eat the p***y and then not returning the favor but she made some hot songs though.

    STILL GOT MORE TO C**M!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AntiFeminization/ AntiFeminization

    11. SHAAZAM – BRING THE HEAT [2000]

Yes the late Dino Conner’s brother had a solo album. It was fiya!

    12. TANK – SEX LOVE & PAIN [2007]

The slow jams are bananas on this album. Nuff said.

    13. AL B. SURE! – SEXY VERSUS [1992]

This was so so slept on

    14. CARL THOMAS – SO MUCH BETTER [2007]

Carl Thomas’ first and only non-Bad Boy album after his Bad Boy days. Sick album…CT is nasty!!

    15. JOE – AIN’T NOBODY LIKE ME [2007]

It makes his new Signature album look like doo-doo *Even though SIGNATURE is a tight-ass album*

    16. MINT CONDITION – LIVIN’ THE LUXURY BROWN [2005] & E-LIFE [2008]

The probably with Mint is that everybody even whipper snappers know who they are, and get turned off because every body knows they are a BAND so nobody wants to hear that Band music. They want to hear “RNB”. So that’s why their last two albums have been ignored.

    17. ANTHONY HAMILTON – XTC [1996] [UNRELEASED]

I still think that this is his best album to date. Andre Harrell was a fool for letting dude go but this was time he decided to bring Horace Brown over to Motown and leave the more talented Anthony Hamilton to rot on a decaying Uptown label. Y’all can hate on Durpi, but if it weren’t for him, A.H. would have thrown in the towel, especially after Mike City’s Soulife Records fell apart in 2001/2002.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/One_2_Cherish/ One_2_Cherish

Can anyone say ANTHONY HAMILTON everytime i hear his voice he melts my soul

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Deletha_J/ Deletha_J

Man Lloyd and Beyonce was pretty good but that Jamie Foxx’s Unpredictable was the ish. But it would have been nice if they would have put Lyfe Jennings on here… the boy is way underrated and he carries such a positive message in his beautiful music

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/EclectiqueMami/ EclectiqueMami

Tamia-Between Friends (2006) she is sooooooo underrated
Lyfe Jennings-this brutha sings the TRUTH!
Chrisette Michelle- Epiphany is a great album to listen to from start to finish
Deborah Cox-this lady can blow many of these current R&B chicks out the box with her voice
I’m gonna cosign with many of the artists that have already been mentioned For the writer of this article how in the world did you conclude that Dangerously in Love was slept on? Bey won 5 Grammy’s that year tying the record with Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys. Ashanti, Aaliyah and Ginuwine received major airplay from those albums so you just may need to redo this list….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CutiPie70126/ CutiPie70126

Wow, no one mentioned Syleena Johnson… Now she is R&B’s best kept secret. Her Chapter 3 CD is excellent. And I concur that Wayne Brady’s CD was slept on.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

I wouldent view albums with alot of airtime and video time as slept on albums. Jazmine sullivan was up for best new artist this year and her songs were on mad crazy so I woulden call her slept on.

Neither would I say the same thing for Lyfe Jennings first album…the buzz was huge and even though he took a little while to build that buzz his album went platinum more than once.

Sometimes an album isnt well known in a certain region but you have to look at the billboard top 100 and soundscan and then truly figure out if an album was slept on….just because it isnt well known in your area doesnt mean it was slept on…I would say any album thats selling below 500,000 units is probably slept on. The writer got the article wrong…or maybe got confused. almost all these albums listed were critical successes.
