With Thom Yorke of Radiohead supposedly snubbing Kanye West at this year’s Grammys, we take a look at how the two mega-stars stack up against each other.
Kanye West, 32
Claim to Fame: West started his accession to fame as producer, creating hits for Beanie Sigel, Jay-Z, Scarface, Talib Kweli and more. He later stepped to the plate as a rapper and has since released four mutli-platinum albums, done collaborations with Nike, Louis Vuitton and is currently working on his own line, Pastelle.
Hits: Where do we begin? In addition to his multiple Grammy awards and beating 50 cent in a sales battle, West is also often credited for bringing the soul back into hip-hop. West is often praised for rapping about his real life experiences and fashion forward style. He also called out former President George Bush on live television for his fumbled response with Hurricane Katrina.
Misses: Once again, where do we begin? West’s ego dwarfs the entire size of this native Chicago. Whether he’s making outlandish claims that he’s the best musician in the world, introducing the masses to shutter shades, or bum rushing the stage to throw a bitch-fit about how he deserves an award, it’s clear that Kanye’s biggest fan will always be himself.
Thom Yorke, 40
Claim to Fame: Yorke is the notoriously shy frontman of the critically acclaimed English outfit Radiohead. In addition to being the main songwriter, he also tackles lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, and beats for the band.
Hits: As part of Radiohead, Yorke has expanded the scope of alternative rock music. Their 1997 album OK Computer is heralded as one of the best albums of the 1990s. With their last effort, 2007′s In Rainbows, the band bucked conventional industry trends and released it digitally and allowed fans to set the price that they wanted to pay for the record. In Rainbows entered the charts at #1, sold three million copies and won two Grammys. In total, Radiohead’s sold over 30 million records worldwide.
Misses: Unless Yorke leads a separate life where he plucks the eyes out living baby bunnies, there are none to speak of. A devoted activist, Yorke has lent himself to several movements including fair trade and anti-globalization. He is anti-war, vegan and refused to meet former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to discuss climate change, citing that Blair had “no environmental credentials.”
Winner: Thom Yorke
Sorry Kanye, but if you think that you’re the world’s best musician because you looped a Grace Jones song and rapped over it with Auto-Tune while Amber Rose combed the tips of your mullet, you’re in for a very, very rude awakening. No wonder Thom Yorke doesn’t want to be your friend.
