Both are strikingly beautiful successful Indian women who, (in the eyes of the public) made some questionable marriage choices. One married a guy with a fatwa on his head, the other wed a man who gained attention for pouring champagne on women in Jay-Z videos. With Padma already divorced and Rachel Roy giving Dame the boot, we see how the two compared to each other.
Padma Lakshmi
Claim to Fame: The smoking hot host of Bravo’s Top Chef has kept viewers tuning into the show since the second season to see exactly what exotic things she’ll put in her mouth. (We’re talking about food, you pervs).
Hits: Born in India, Lakshmi kicked off her modeling career at age 20 when she was discovered in Spain. She’s modeled for designers such as Ralph Lauren and Alberta Ferretti. Lakshmi was a personal favorite of photographer Helmut Lang who often focused shooting the scar on her right arm. In 2002 she graced the cover of Cosmopolitan. She’s also written two cookbooks, 1999′s Easy Exotic and 2007′s Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet.
Misses: There’s an unwritten rule that models make terrible acting choices, and Laksmi is no exception. She appeared in Mariah Carey‘s box-office bomb Glitter and the massive Bollywood failure Boom. In 2004, she married controversial novelist Salman Rushdie, who is older than her father. The two divorced in 2007 and she’s now linked to Ted Forstmann, who is even older than Rushdie. Maybe all the weird stuff that’s cooked on Top Chef has affected her sense of smell. Because old people smell.
Rachel Roy
Claim to Fame: The soon to be ex-Mrs. Damon Dash is a New York based fashion designer who has her eponymous collection sold at finer stores such as Nieman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.
Hits: Starting as an intern at Rocawear, Roy elevated through the ranks to become the creative director of the women’s and children’s divisions. In 2005, she launched her collection and soon entered into a partnership with Jones Apparel Group to produce, market and distribute her line.
Misses: She got married to Dame Dash when he was on the precipice of success and when it didn’t pan out, she bailed. Is that the reason? Maybe it’s because Dame’s a smart, yet delusional character. Remember that time he went on The O’Reilly Factor? Now imagine being married to that.
Winner: Padma Lakshmi
Rachel Roy may be a talented designer, but since Padma knows her away around the kitchen, she’s our girl. Plus we’re not really tuning into Top Chef for the contestants.
