On Martin Luther King Day, most people take a day off. This year however, Americans have been asked to participate in a day on, meaning sloth and sluggishness is forbidden, or at least is suggested as such. Last weekend, Michelle Obama called for national assistance via vlog post on her hubby’s website. On January 19, the day before the inauguration, every man, woman, and child can fulfill their “call to service” by volunteering in their community. You can host an event or find one to join here. No excuses, because they’ve got something for everyone: outdoor clean-ups, singing to seniors, “cans for the cause,” walk-a-thons, etc. The power couple will be spending their day volunteering, too, in their new home of Washington, D.C.
A few words of wisdom from our future President:
“America’s greatness was not crafted in skyscrapers alone, but on the ground by those who could see what needed to be done.”
He’s asked us to step up and step forward. Let’s not embarrass him. The parades and celebrations can be put on hold momentarily.
