Reprise

Reprise
Writing is a notoriously difficult subject to make a movie about, largely because the idea of watching someone hunched over a pad of paper, typewriter or computer keyboard for two hours sounds only slightly more appealing than another Star Wars prequel.  But Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier didn’t let the stop him from centering his sparkling feature debut around a pair of friends and aspiring novelists whose lives take vastly different turns on the road towards becoming published writers.  Much of the film’s appeal has to do with its unapologetically flamboyant style, which brings to mind Boogie Nights-era Paul Thomas Anderson as well as Steven Soderbergh circa Out of Sight and The Limey.  I should also mention that the film is frequently very, very funny, without resorting to turning its characters into buffoons.  Only a handful of films capture the writing process believably and you can add Reprise to that list.
