Spaced: The Complete Series
Spaced: The Complete Series (BBC, $60)
Before Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, British comic geniuses Edgar Wright (who co-writes and directs), Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (who both co-write and act) collaborated on this 12-episode series about a slacker comic-book artist (Pegg) and an eccentric aspiring journalist (Jessica Hynes) who pretend to be a married couple so they can move into an affordable flat in a decent part of London. Packed with tons of geek-friendly in-jokes (the number of Star Wars references is dizzying at times) and a hilarious ensemble of whacked-out characters, Spaced more than lives up to its cult classic reputation. Available in its entirely in the States for the first time, this DVD-set also comes with some incredible bonus features; each episode offers two or three audio commentaries (which sport cameos from such famous fans as Quentin Tarantino) and a comprehensive “history of Spaced” documentary that answers every single question you could possibly have about the series.
