Justice League: The New Frontier
Justice League: The New Frontier (Warner Bros., $24.98)
In an ongoing attempt to keep their funnybook characters in the public consciousness in between summer blockbusters, Marvel and DC have taken to putting out direct-to-DVD animated movies starring their respective stable of heroes. So far Marvel is whupping DC’s butt in terms of quantity (5 flicks to DC’s 3), but the Distinguished Competition is schooling the House of Ideas when it comes to quality. The jewel in the company’s crown has to be this beautifully animated adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s fan-favorite graphic novel, which details the exploits of Justice League stalwarts Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter during Cold War-era America. Bonus features include a documentary covering the League’s 40-year history in the pages of DC Comics, two audio commentaries (including one with Cooke himself) and three episodes of Cartoon Network’s late, great Justice League animated series.
