Last weekend, comedian/actor Aziz Ansari went to see Star Trek in IMAX. Or, so he thought. After paying the additional $5 for the IMAX experience, Ansari viewed the film, only to realize that he wasn’t watching the sci-fi epic on a 75ft screen (i.e. the size of a real IMAX screen), on a slightly bigger movie screen (an additional five feet coupled with digital sound and picture), which was dubbed IMAX Digital, and according to Ansari, misleading.

Feeling duped, he asked for his money back – only the $5 extra he paid to get the IMAX experience – and was promptly refused and instead offered tickets to another film. The Parks and Recreation star then took to his Twitter (which boasts 25,000+ followers) and his blog and unleashed a verbal fury and call to boycott AMC and Regal theaters where IMAX Digital is offered. Ansari posted on his blog:

Some people at Regal and AMC both wanted to call these screens IMAX Digital so as to differentiate it somehow from the giant IMAX screens people are used to associating with the name IMAX. Apparently IMAX doesn’t see anything wrong with duping customers like this and insisted on simply keeping it as IMAX. Well, I have a better term how about – “BULLSHIT IMAX.” Cause that’s what it is.

Frankly, we’re riding with Ansari, because when it comes to seeing Star Trek, this is case where size does matter.
