Tyler Perry puts the Jonas Brothers in their place, as Madea Goes to Jail tops the box office chart for the second weekend in a row.
Take that Jonas Brothers! The latest overhyped, overexposed teen pop phenom failed to dislodge pistol-packing grandma Madea from the top spot at the box office this weekend, as Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience opened in second place with 12.7 million, well behind the $16.5 million earned by Madea Goes to Jail. The brothers Jonas didn’t even come close to topping their predecessor Miley “Hannah Montana” Cyrus, whose own 3D concert film enjoyed a $31 million opening weekend during its release a year ago this month. With a mega-selling album and a TV-series on the way, the Jonas Brothers aren’t going the way of New Kids on the Block just yet, but consider this the week that the clock starts on their fifteen minutes of fame.
After its Oscar triumph last weekend, Slumdog Millionaire roared into third place with $12 million, bringing its total gross to $115 million–well above the final box-office tally of last year’s Best Picture winner, No Country for Old Men. The movie should enjoy a few more solid weekends in multiplexes before finding its way onto DVD. Elsewhere, January holdovers Taken and Paul Blart: Mall Cop refuse to leave the Top Ten, landing at fourth and sixth place this weekend respectively. Sandwiched in between them is He’s Just Not That Into You, which is $20 million away from joining the $100 million movie club. Families continue to show up for the stop-motion animated adventure Coraline, which finished in seventh place, and Confessions of a Shopaholic and Fired Up! took ninth and tenth. Finally, despite a limited publicity campaign and no advanced screenings for critics, the weekend’s only other new release Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li somehow managed an eighth place finish, although its anemic $4.6 million gross suggests that it will be out of theaters and on DVD by April.
