The Historical Society of Washington D.C. is displaying an exhibition of hand crafted, colorful and emotionally charged patchwork creations in “Quilts for Obama: Celebrating the Inauguration of the 44th President” from January 11 to February 1, 2009. Some 40 quilts cover the walls of the small, dark gallery space. But the energy, joy and celebratory craftsmanship in these works gives the collection a private, intimate and almost spiritual feeling. Many of the handmade bed covers and banners offer greetings from Kenya to Hawaii, congratulations from Cincinnati to Charlotte, N.C. This artwork evokes a profound feeling of pride, hope and progress. “Quilts for Obama” is a cultural experience for the Inaugural tourist.
