Who will top the list at number one?

There’s been a bit of a delay with the arrival of the Obamas new puppy.  However, they are expected to get it this month.  They seem to be leaning toward a Portugese Water dog which the First Lady explains, “Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good.”  Sasha and Malia are working on a name, among two which Lady O completely nixed out, Moose and Frank.  “Come on, let’s work with these names a little bit.” was her response.  Eagerly, Sasha came back with ‘April 1st’, guess we’ll have to wait and see.

He’s more known for his stoner-persona Kumar and work in The Namesake, but actor Kal Penn will soon be taking on a role that supersedes even Hollywood. The Indian-American actor is joining President Obama’s staff as the Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Liaison.

“They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations,” Penn told EW.com about his new position.”They’re basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House.”

Penn ended his run on the Fox series House last night, April 6, to take the position. (We’ll keep the spoilers out for those of you who DVR’ed it). 

Of his acting career, Penn told EW.com that he won’t be retiring, “But for the time being, I won’t be acting.”

Although the movie released in June of 1989, this week, while honoring Black History Month ImageNation at Lincoln Center celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Do The Right Thing with Spike Lee.

This is a CLASSIC!  Filmed on Stuyvesant Avenue, this movie portrayed racial conflict in a multi-ethnic Brooklyn neighborhood (BED-STUY, Do or Die!).  Written, produced, directed and even starred in by Spike Lee (Mookie), the cast included Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro… debuting both Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez.

Not only will the film be screened, but the event will kick off with Chuck D and the Apollo Heights performing the rock rendition of “Fight The Power” (the first release from the Do The Right Thing soundtrack).  Then a discussion with members of the cast and crew to follow the movie.

PARTY AT THE WHITE HOUSE…

President and First Lady Obama held their first shindig at the White House Sunday evening, inviting the nation’s governors (Alaska Governor Sarah Palin did not attend.  Wonder why?).  With a well planned out menu by the lovely First Lady, Earth, Wind and Fire got things heated up with Boogie Wonderland.

SEDULOUS (adj) – showing dedication and diligence

Ralph Lauren closed out Fashion Week with a sedulous runway presentation.

This really is a coupling of two topics that brings me joy. Pres elect Barack Obama and pancakes. Shot in 2001 for a Chicago show called, “Check, Please!” here is a clip with the then Illinois senator critiquing several local restaurants. The previously unaired episode will finally first see the light of day on January 16th with additional airings slated for the 18th and on inauguration day. Ads for local station WWTTW (home to the show) must be, ahem, selling like HOTCAKES. Or um flapjacks.

The Daily Intel folk at New York Mag report that hopefuls (heh) wanting to get their sticky mitts on a Shepard Fairey X Barack Obama poster are shit outta luck.
The iconic “Hope” image will no longer be sold on the artist’s web site because haters just can’t help themselves. “I just sold as many posters as I needed to keep making more posters. If I kept selling… the Internet chatter would have been, ‘Oh, well Shepard Fairey’s just trying to cash in on this Obama thing.’”

Of course the same Internet that vilifies such wondrous menschfaces as mister Fairey also brings dudes as awesome as THIS GUY. who not only is selling TWO (better hurry up!) Fairey-signed Obama posters at $5 K EACH but is also selling two copies of The Audacity of Hope, both SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT ELECT and strangely priced at $4500 LESS than the artwork.
SO…
Shepard Fairey is important. Important is expensive. Shep is more expensive than Obama. Graf artist is more important than president. TADA! Post hoc ergo propter hoc has approved this message. YAY!

Graffiti artists are taking this year’s election into their own “cans”—get it, cans. Anyway, the idea of change is popping up in street art all over the country: from Obama as Superman on a New York City street, to the man himself shaking hands with America in Chicago; graffiti has taken to Obama like 50 Cent to the dollar bill.

Graffiti provides a voice for the voiceless, those whose opinions are not often covered by the standard media. It has been used as a means for political subcultures to get their word on the street and into the minds of the everyday folk.

For decades, graff artists used the peace sign as a symbol for positive change. Today, Barack Obama is that symbol. With the election just five days away, maybe McCain should get his graffiti grind on and start tagging “Maverick”—or maybe “MavOne”—on city blocks.
