This box set containing the first season of television’s best drama wins my award for coolest packaging of the year, even beating out that Big Lebowski bowling ball. All 13 episodes are spread across four discs, which come in a tin box fashioned after a Zippo lighter. Almost every hour comes is accompanied by a commentary track featuring key cast and crew members and five featurettes reveal some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating this superbly crafted series. The real prize, of course, is having the episodes themselves to revisit over and over again. To borrow the famous phrase from the cable network that stupidly passed up the chance to air Matthew Weiner’s groundbreaking series, Mad Men isn’t TV–it’s art.
