1. Maxwell

Who knows how to make a better comeback then Maxwell? Though “Pretty Wings” is still in rotation on everyone’s Ipod, Maxwell has also dropped the video for his newest single “Bad Habits” with a chameo from the irresistible Kerry Washington. BLACKsummers’Night debuted at number one and proves that R&B is still alive and kicking. 

2. Jay-Z 

With the drop of The Blueprint III around the corner, Hov has been hitting these streets promoting the most anticipated album of 2009 with a stunt of publicity overdose. The CEO of the ROC was seen in New York this weekend on set for the video for the second single off the album, “Run This Town” with his little brother ‘Ye and sister Rihanna in tow. Also while in the city, the Jigga man was spotted strolling through the hoods of Marcy Projects with mogul Oprah Winfrey on his arms. I guess the advantage of not being put on her show is being her personal tour guide through your hood, literally. 

3. Kimora Lee Simmons

After months of baby Kenzo being MIA, we doubted we would ever get a glimpse of the bouncing bundle of joy. Though Djimon and Kimora didn’t receive anywhere near the money Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubrey received for leaked pics of baby Nahla, Kimora looks stunning with her new family in their OK! Magazine photoshoot. 

4. T.I.

Though Tip is still behind bars, it doesn’t mean he can’t be King while he’s gone. His single “Remember Me” featuring Mary J. Blige was No. 3 on the itunes top downloads and the he has also dropped a video for “Slide Show” featuring Justin Timberlake. Check it out below….

5. Solange

The stars came out to play as the songwriter and publisher organization, SESAC, held their 13th annual New York Music Awards on May 12. Honorees included writers Regie Hamm for “The Time of My Life,” recorded by American Idol star David Cook; Nikeshia Briscoe for “Womanizer” recorded by Britney Spears; and Greg Curtis  for “I Remember” recorded by Keyshia Cole. Billboard chart-topper Chrisette Michele was in the house as she was awarded the timely Ascension Award in recognition of her significant creative growth and musical success she’s experienced in the last couple of years. Check out the photos to see the winners and star studded attendees!

Now, she’s teaching the fellas how to ”Trust.” The duet features R&B star Monica who we haven’t heard from in a minute, and the newly-released video was elegantly shot in Tuscany, Italy. Fans get to see a softer side of Miss. Cole – not to mention, the lovely piece of chocolate eye candy that plays her man. 

Keyshia Cole hits the road with The-Dream on their 21 city tour opening on May 13th at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati.

These black petal clad heeled peep toe stilettos are the perfect center-piece for any look. Dress up a pair of ripped skinny jeans and tank or add some spice to your cocktail look like Ms. Cole.

I don’t know what it is about leather on a woman that transitions them from a beautiful gracious lady into a dark in-control sex symbol but whatever it is definitely keeps peoples attention. Over the years leather has been used to create a darker persona making one more edgy  for example Rihanna, Beyoncé, Ciara, Mary J. Blige, J.Lo even Cat Woman have made it work for them. So I ask you what is it about leather?

DJ Beverly Bond created Black Girls Rock! to support, educate and empower young women. This year was the Third Annual Black Girls Rocks! Awards “celebrating the accomplishments of exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers and who stand as inspirational and positive role models in the community.”

Check out the super women of the night. Regina King hosted the evening that honored Estelle, Rachel Llyod, June Ambrose, DJ Cocoa Chanelle, Bethann Hardison, Keyshia Cole, Nicole Paultre-Bell and Valerie Bell, Erykah Badu, April Holmes, Iman and Pam Grier. If that is not enough of a power list, Susan Taylor delivered an inspirational message about African American empowerment. Universal/Motown honcho Sylvia Rhone, Veronica Webb, Tracey Reese, Kevin Powell and Melvin Van Peeples were just a few of the evenings presenters. And Bilal, Saui, Sarah Jones (fresh from the New York City Marathon) and Faith Evans all performed. Needless to say it was a special evening.

Hip-hop has often been described as a young man’s game. Since its humble beginnings, the genre has always been about the now, the flash of what’s new and what’s next, without ever truly paying homage to what came before. The rampant success of young acts such as Soulja Boy and Plies had me, a 31-year-old recovering hip-hop addict, headed right to easy-listening rehab. No Ice-T on me, but the fact that Lil Wayne is considered a veteran at the ripe age of 26 should tell you something.

Recently, however, something changed. Throughout the summer I started nodding my head more and more to tracks by Nas, Busta Rhymes and LL Cool J. No, I didn’t buy a satellite radio and crank up the old-school station. These were new songs. And it seemed as though some of hip-hop’s most seasoned veterans (or, as the kids say, “old-ass rappers”) hadn’t faded into the night. Apparently many of these artists still have a couple of hot 16s left in them. Granted some rappers (Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg) transcend age, but even those artists can catch the wrath of a 16-year-old kid who thinks they should hang up their mics. I challenge that kid-and anyone else who feels to same way-not to rock to Nas’s “Fried Chicken” or Busta’s “Don’t Touch Me Now (Throw Da Water on ‘Em)” because, at the end of the day, good music is good music, regardless of an MC’s age.

That being said, we don’t need to go crazy with the old-man rap. I don’t want to hear a new Rev. Run album or see a Salt-N-Pepa music video featuring Keyshia Cole. I still prefer my really old rappers where they belong: on reality TV.

Ghetto, fabulous and super-talented, Keyshia Cole has what it takes to become R&B’s next big superstar. But can she just get out of her own way?

Three and a half hours after she was scheduled to arrive at a Santa Monica, California, photo studio, there is still no sign of R&B singer Keyshia Cole. The photographer, stylist and makeup artist—not to mention the camera crew trailing Cole for the second season of her BET reality series, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is—do their best to feign patience. Still, whenever a car pulls into the parking lot, all heads turn. And it’s always a false alarm.

“She works on her own schedule,” says Ri-Karlo Handy, supervising producer for The Way It Is, “but don’t be there when she wants to go somewhere or do something and you’re not ready.”

Cole’s manager, Manny Halley, and her label publicist, Tresa Sanders, saunter into the studio. Both seem genuinely surprised to find their artist missing. Calls are made. BlackBerrys are whipped out. They’ve been through this before.

“What’s it like to follow her around?” I ask two of the crew members as they gather around a monitor with a static view of the parking lot. They exchange looks and chuckle. “Raw,” says one man, who asks to remain anonymous. “Like Mary when she first came out—don’t-get-punched-in-the-mouth kind of thing. But she speaks for the people who listen to her music.”

An hour and a half later, suddenly lights are set up. Booms pop out. Cameras are at the ready.

“She’s here,” they shout.

Donning designer shades, the five-foot-two Cole struts in, trailed by a bodyguard, who is about the same size as the Cadillac Escalade from which they emerged.

“I’m Keyshia,” she says, offering her hand. Her grip is supple and confident.

Being a star means never having to say you’re sorry. So she doesn’t.

Two hours later, Cole stands on the studio’s rooftop rocking form-fitting pants and black lipstick. She looks every bit the ghetto superstar. The sunglasses come off, and her eyes are more vulnerable than sensual, almost needy.

Making people wait, having cameras record her every move, Cole seems to feeds off the attention. After all, she went from an unnoticed young chick to the mouth that roared. Her attitude speaks volumes: If I’m not important, then why is everybody watching me?
