These days, the world is quite literally at out fingertips. Cellphone apps have become the medium of choice for everything from soial networking to planning a fabulous night on the town. Now, it seems that the world of fashion is making its way out of the glossies and into the lcd screen of your phone via a set of new apps designed specifially to keep you stylish on the go. As if the recent boom of internet bloggers wasn’t enough to unhinge the magazine’s monopoly on fashion, apps are next in line to cause an upraor in the industry that once looked only to editorials as the authority on all things style. NY Mag put together a top ten list of the best fashion apps available; need a wardrobe lesson? There’s an app for that. Check them out:

(From NYMag.com)

“What is ‘apps?’” Christian Louboutin once asked a writer at The Wall Street Journal, before admitting, “I’m a very bad technician. Technology, zero.” Of course, Louboutin isn’t the only Luddite in the fashion industry, whose frosty attitude toward all things tech is just starting to thaw. As more designers warm to the idea of e-commerce, they’re also getting hip to the smartphone frontier. Several biggies have rolled out iPhone apps to show off their collections, and, in rarer instances, allow users to shop. And just last week, eBay, which pretty much has the web-retail sector cornered, introduced a free fashion app, which allows users to browse and purchase more than 20 million fashion items, as well as “try on” clothes and build virtual closets.

We sifted through the glut of fashion-centric apps to see which ones are worth your precious downloading time; click ahead to see our top ten picks for the iPhone. (Sorry, Android users, but your options are still limited. Download nymag.com’s free blog app for now and pray that all those pretentious iGeeks get their just desserts in an Apple recall.)

1.

Chicfeed

This bare-bones app pulls photos from some of the Internet’s most respected style blogs, including the Sartorialist, Face Hunter, and Lookbook. The sorting functionality — or lack thereof — leaves something to be desired, but if you’re just seeking quick-hit eye candy, there’s no better way to see loads of style snaps all in one spot. The app is available two ways: free with advertising or 99 cents without.

2.

Diane Von Furstenberg

While many designers with apps remain skeptical about mobile commerce, Von Furstenberg told W, “We already do so many things from our phones, so shopping is a natural progression.” Accordingly, DVF’s app allows users to shop via a “Looks We Love” section or by thumbing through the collections — albeit not 24/7. (Our nighttime request to purchase a one-shoulder floral dress wasn’t addressed until regular business hours.) Still, DVF gets props for rounding out the app with Facebook-sharing capabilities and access to her Twitter feed.

3.

Gap StyleMixer

This innovative brand app allows you to mix and match Gap items with pieces already hanging in your closet. Create outfits using uploaded photos or use the “Mixer” to browse Gap products and create head-to-toe new looks. Shake your phone and the Mixer will generate a random combination of pieces, including shoes and accessories. The “Community” function allows you to share your uploaded looks, as well as check out combos other app users are creating. On the downside, if you’re near a Gap location, you can also supposedly “unlock” a special promotion on your phone; we tried, but were lamely told to “check back soon for a new offer.”

4.

Glamour Ask a Stylist

Wang or Wu? Jeggings or jorts? Dr. Scholl’s with socks or without? These are the types of pressing sartorial questions one might bounce off a trusted friend — or one of Glamour’s on-call app stylists. Here’s how it works: Browse their mini-bios (some are from glamour.com, others from Craigslist), choose the one most up your aesthetic alley, upload your outfit pic and/or inquiry, and wait. Our selected stylist responded to our day-to-night dilemma fifteen minutes after we fired off our request. And, in true women’s-mag fashion, we were given an extra boost of confidence (“You’ll look awesome wherever you go!”). A solid bet for the indecisive.

5.

iShoes

Scroll through more than 50,000 kicks in the shoe-porn Finder, or search the sea of shoes by style and designer. The app indicates which pairs are on sale and connects you straight to buy-it-now retailers. The app is free, functional, and offers decent-size closeups of each item, though we hope its creators introduce better browsing filters (like color, size, heel height, material, etc.) with the next update.

To read about the other apps that made the top ten, go here!

Quintessence is atypical in male models. Known for their washboard abs, I’m-so-sexy pout, maneater bedroom eyes and schoolboy grin, the standard for male models has usually been of the tall, bronzed and handsome shtick. Clocking in with the Tantric aura of a rock sex god, with the swagger of a hip-hop iceman and the wit of a cool kid shock art illuminato, Ibrahim Baaith is a not your average high fashion cardboard cut-out carbon copy. Nor is he some quacked avatar expression of a new age rising supermodel. He’s just a young man, focused and on his grind who is just as passionate as he is creative. A painter. A model. A spokesperson. And not long ago, he joined the “ethnic” male model camarilla: a coterie of black Adonis figures serving as the selective muses of scissor-shaping hairstylists, crème de la crème flash-happy shutterbugs and gaudy glitterati endimanché designers. How has he been handling it? With a grain of salt and smiling all the way to the finish line!

Talking to several male fashion models of color to discuss the fashion world and its ups and downs, race and culture, we get the skinny on the experience of being diverse in fashion. The fifth and final fashion beau Ibrahim gets candid between fashion shows and art shows, to briefly talk about his rise, reality TV, diversity, travel and everything else in-between.

Giant: How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure?

Ibrahim: I was 18 when someone approached me to say I have what it takes to become a model. Right from there sparked my drive to make it happen. I eventually made trips to New York to scout agencies interested in my look. Once a few agencies gave me the green light, I moved to New York and the rest is history.

Giant: You were recently featured on Model City for Centric, what was it like getting small screen experience?

Ibrahim: It was very gratifying and humbling experience. At first I was a little concerned about my image on the show but after developing a relationship with the producers, I felt more comfortable revealing more about myself and even managed to direct the focus on other aspects that define me, such as my art. The show gave me great exposure and I’m very thankful for that.

Giant: Learn anything while being on the show?

Ibrahim: I’ve learned to let things go, and focus on what really matters in my life. I also absorbed a lot of information on what it takes to produce a quality show and it has since motivated me to try creating my own.

Giant: What was your first gig?

Ibrahim: My first gig was a commercial shoot for a Coca-Cola vending machine. As corny as that sounds, it paid very well, as most commercial shoots do. I’m jumping out of a soda bottle…with a basketball.

He laughs softly.

Giant: What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important?

Ibrahim: The most attractive trait is confidence, no matter what. I’ve seen all types of guys in this industry, and no matter the physical appearance, what helps you clock work is your presence, which starts from how you feel about yourself. I think that extends to anything.

Giant: The modeling world is ruled by women mostly. Is it because they purchase more clothes or is it because menswear is so simple?

Ibrahim: No, I think it’s because in this world of men, women are objectified as sexual objects many times over than men. And sex sells.

Giant: Other than modeling agencies RED and Benetton, there’s not a lot of diversity. What do you think the fashion world is missing?

Ibrahim: It’s simply diversity. Not just in color, but in size and shape as well.

Giant: Some designers have stated they don’t design their clothes for black people like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Do they hire black models or have you been approached by fashion house of this caliber?

Ibrahim: Of course they hire blacks…just not many of them. I’ve walked for TH before, but the ratio of ethnic to Caucasian models have always been grossly disproportionate. It’s only a small handful of us that gets a pass to do the more prestigious designers (the same 5 black models), and I’m barely in that category myself.

Giant: What do you feel about blacks and other minorities wearing the clothes?

Ibrahim: At the end of the day, everyone is heavily influenced by the media. Most major corporations aren’t racially diverse, and nor are the advertisements for their products. So no matter what, all types of nationalities all over the world are dying to wear the latest designs off the runway, I suppose, to feel accepted and successful. Until that creative spark ignites within the minds of ethnic consumers to go left field and become designers themselves, can they stop supporting mainstream designers who obviously don’t support them.

Giant: How do you feel about the opinion of male models being accessories in fashion shoots?

Ibrahim: I mean that doesn’t bother me as much because normally women are the ones dominated in most other industries, so if they rule fashion, so be it. I just don’t agree with men being paid a fraction of what women earn, that is, working the exact same job. It’s discriminatory, but then again, it is the fashion industry.

Giant: What does the fashion world need most?

Ibrahim: It needs a Union, ASAP!!!

At this point, its fun to imagine an American flag waving in the backdrop as he stands on a podium dressed in a tailored suit, probably designed by Tom Ford, delivering dialogue.

Ibrahim: There’s SAG to protect actors in Hollywood, but why not anything to protect models in Fashion?

Giant: You’ve traveled quite a bit. What places have you been to? Any place in particular that you just adore?

Ibrahim: Oh, I haven’t traveled nearly enough. But I’ve been all over the US, the Bahamas and Europe. I’d have to say I absolutely loved Eleuthera.

Giant: Have you picked up any skills in your travels?

Ibrahim: I’ve learned a good bit of Italian, but I’m pretty rusty.

Giant: Have you allowed yourself to learn other cultures because of your ability to travel?

Ibrahim: Of course, other cultures have a lot to teach us. So, I keep an open mind and try to absorb as much as I can.

Giant: It’s a recession. How are you making money in such a harsh socioeconomic zeitgeist as this?

Ibrahim: For now, I freelance doing illustrations for a variety of clients. Also I’m currently organizing my solo exhibition where I plan to sell my artwork, and soon my work will be available online where my supporters can purchase prints, T-shirts, etc.

Giant: How would you describe your ‘art’?

Ibrahim: Vibrant, message-driven and passionate, maybe a bit primal. And it’s a little all over the place.

He laughs self-effacingly.

Just like me.

A carefree smile grazes across his face like a switchblade.

Giant: Are casting directors and designers a lot harder than they were five years ago because of the recession?

Ibrahim: I wouldn’t use the term “harder” to describe these casting directors/designers.

He laughs, coy.

Ibrahim: But, I will say that the rates for big money jobs have dramatically dropped to cheap prostitution rates, with a ‘take it or leave it’ attitude to follow…

Giant: What is the one thing you would change about the fashion world?

Ibrahim: More diverse designers…

Giant: Its fashion week, will you be a part of any shows?

Ibrahim: Unfortunately not this season.

He sinks into his seat, disappointed but not defeated.

Giant: Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with?

Ibrahim: Sure, Macy’s have been a loyal client of mine for years. They pay well and fast!

Giant: Anyone in particular that you are not willing to work with?

Ibrahim: Oh, yes but I won’t say who. [It’s] too political…

Giant: Any labels or clients you’d be smitten to work with?

Ibrahim: Goldspun and G-star are some of my favorite designers, so any campaign involving them would be a dream come true. But a Calvin Klein underwear ad would set it off!

Giant: Anything in the future you’re excited about?

Ibrahim: Yes! An exhibition featuring paintings [that] I performed live as well as collaborations with a multitude of other artists…coming soon!

Call him the Fantôme Homme.
Call him the Fantôme Homme. To American audiences, the term may seem like an in-vogue mod chic terminology, but to a young man who was mocked for his alien appearance, “ghost man” is not an encouraging nom de plume. Labeled “Casper” and “Cum” by cruel schoolchildren growing up, 19-year-old Shaun Ross, an albino black model from Bronx, New York who was ridiculed as a child growing up, is not a trailblazer but he is in fact a mounting envelope pusher in fashion. He’s not the first model with albinism but oddly enough, he’s the only one that comes to mind in recent decades. It’s a no-brainer; casting agencies often hire darker-skinned or biracial-looking black male models, a standard set by what is now the idyllic Tyson Beckford paradigm standard. And Ross—who supports an athletic waif swimmer’s physique—is nowhere close in that category. His isabelline “brond” flattop, eggshell pink skin and haunting chartreuse green eyes have been the talk of the fashion world. A mover-’n-shaker who aspired a career in modern dance, he was discovered on the viral talent search phenomenon YouTube by Djamee, a boutique modeling agency in New York in 2008. After being ‘stalked’ on his Twitter account by representatives, he soon shot editorials and campaigns for Patrik Ervell, Tim Hamilton, 3rd Fl., Odyn Vovk, Gap Trace, Another Magazine, British GQ, Paper Magazine and Vogue Italia. What can we say, he adds a level of sex, sophistication, edge and swagger… now, if only the fashion industry could get a clue already!

Talking to several male fashion models of color to discuss the fashion world and its ups and downs, race and culture, we get the skinny on the experience of being diverse in fashion. Drifting through the city, Ross, the glitterati riff-raff whispers in our ear about presentation, race and travel. Everything else is strictly confidential.

Giant: How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure?

Shaun: I was discovered by a photographer on YouTube who had viewed my YouTube video of me dancing and asked me what was my height and age. At the time, I was 16. I’m not sure of how I [can] get more exposure, but more exposure is always good exposure!

Giant:What was your first gig?

Shaun: Look Book for [3rd]#rd Floor Menswear!

Giant:What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important?

Shaun: Being confident; you have to have confidence in everything you do because this industry is all about breaking people down and when you are confident, no one can break you down.

Giant: The modeling world is ruled by women mostly. Is it because they purchase more clothes or is it because menswear is so simple?

Shaun: Yes it is because woman purchase more clothing, plus its more of a woman’s essential.

Giant: Other than modeling agencies RED and Benetton, there’s not a lot of diversity. What do you think the fashion world is missing?

Shaun: Well, Benetton is not a modeling agency it is a clothing brand, “The United Colors of Benetton.” As for RED, I’ve never heard of them.

He smiles eccentrically.

Giant: Some designers have either been rumored to have said or have flat-out stated they don’t design their clothes for black people like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Do they hire black models or have you been approached by fashion house of this caliber?

Shaun: No, I have not. I am not in the commercial field, so I really don’t get to see those clients.

Giant:What do you feel about blacks and other minorities wearing the clothes?

Shaun: I don’t think of it!

Giant:You are often labeled “the albino model”. Are you often hindered of opportunities because of it? Have there been benefits because of it?

Shaun: Yes. Sure. Why not? It has its ups and downs, though.

Giant: How do you feel about the opinion of male models being accessories in fashion shoots?

Shaun: It will never change.

Giant: What does the fashion world need most?

Shaun: A clue!
Giant:You’ve traveled quite a bit. What places have you been to? Any place in particular that you just adore? Have you picked up any skills in your travels? Have you allowed yourself to learn other cultures because of your ability to travel?

Shaun: I have traveled to Paris, Milan, Berlin… [All over the world]. I must say, I love Berlin the most because of the kindness of people there. [And] I always pick up something on my travels, like learning the language.

Giant: It’s a recession. How are you making money in such a harsh socioeconomic zeitgeist as this?

Shaun: [Uh, that’s] classified information.

Giant: Are casting directors and designers a lot harder than they were five years ago because of the recession?

Shaun: Yes, they are doing their job but it does not look good.

Giant: What is the one thing you would change about the fashion world?

Shaun: Actually giving them a clue or a sense of direction.

Giant: Its fashion week, will you be a part of any shows?

Shaun: No, I am sitting out!

Giant: Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with?

Shaun: Sally Lapointe and Nicholas Routzen.

Giant: Anyone in particular that you are not willing to work with?

Shaun: [Again, that’s] classified information.

Giant: Any labels or clients you’d be smitten to work with?

Shaun: [Sorry, that is also] classified.

Giant: Anything you looking forward to this upcoming week?

Shaun: Yes, seeing the disaster of it all.

Giant:Anything in the future you’re excited about?

Shaun: [Just] wait and you will see.

Continuing our tribute to upcoming male model megastars, we looked high and low through out the ether for faces with a narrative. You know, faces that went beyond the everyday hum-drum of the coffee-riddled office life stereotype or the sleaze, Wonder Bread and ecstasy supermodel superficiality. It’s rare actually, to find someone with as much knowledge of themselves and their profession at such a young age, who could walk in and follow protocol without batting an eye. Only 21 years-old, Nate Gill of Major Model Management is the latest member of the pantheon of black male model hotness. His posh boy next door façade and street devil-may-care feral kid abandonment has classified him as a leading luminary in fashion. In fashion terminology, if Shawn Sutton is the male equivalent to Chanel Iman, Nate Gill is the male equivalent to Jordon Dunn, all of whom are making gargantuan seismic tremors on the runways. In plain English, he’s slowly becoming a gold lion among house cats.

Talking to several male fashion models of color to discuss the fashion world and its ups and downs, race and culture, we get the skinny on the experience of being diverse in fashion. On the go, Gill—the third of our fashion beaus—talks to us between his hectic Fashion Week affairs, flaunting his sultry wit to share his insights, his ladies’ love and the mechanics of the male modeling world.

Giant: What are you known for in the fashion industry?

Nate: That depends on who you ask. Physically, my body (abs mainly, and my lips) but I’d like to think I’m known for my professionalism, hard work, enthusiasm, and positive energy and attitude.

Giant: How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure?

Nate: Initially, I just went in to an open casting call in San Francisco. When I was discovered In New York? 19. Honestly, I think I’m exposing myself in the right ways, the right places. There are some amazing jobs I haven’t been able to take; some I would have really loved, but I’m just happy to be working, and for all the great clients that I have the opportunity to represent.

Giant: What was your first gig?

Nate: Officially? Mervyn’s. I made 500 dollars while I was working at Starbucks, it was like winning the lottery. But my second was Polo, and after that was an editorial for V magazine.

Giant: What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important?

Nate: You’re going to get a very different answer from me than from most people because I would probably say faith. That’s what gives me the confidence to walk into a room where I literally have no control over the clients’ ideal. I do my part, stay healthy, positive, in shape, but if I’m not what they’re looking for, none of that matters.

Giant: The modeling world is ruled by women mostly. Is it because they purchase more clothes or is it because menswear is so simple?

Nate: Obviously women have more choices. Their fashion is more avant-garde. Women are also the softer sex; they’re naturally aesthetically pleasing. That, mixed with the art [of] women’s fashion affords, of course they purchase more clothes and “rule” the industry. Luckily, I don’t have to compete with them. I’m happy growing as much as I can in the men’s world.

Giant: Some designers have either been rumored to have said or have flat-out stated they don’t design their clothes for black people like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Do they hire black models or have you been approached by fashion house of this caliber?

Nate: Oddly enough, I have worked more than once for both of those names and have loved doing so. The idea of color is changing in the industry, I’m proud to be part of that.

Giant: As the new face of Tommy Hilfiger, how do you feel about the spread of the urban legend?

Nate: I’m not sure what you mean by “urban legend” but I assume that’s about the spread of men of color in the industry, and again I just think its a beautiful thing.

Giant: What do you feel about blacks and other minorities wearing the clothes?

Nate: I think it’s great! I did one show this Fashion Week, where I was the only person of color. That’s an honor to me. But then for Phillip Lim, nearly half the show was minorities and I love seeing that. We’re breaking down old barriers slowly but surely.

Giant: How do you feel about the opinion of male models being accessories in fashion shoots?

Nate: Well, I was what you would call “an accessory” for that V magazine shoot when I first got here, and you know whose accessory I got to be? Beyonce’s. So, being an accessory hasn’t exactly done me any harm.

Giant: What does the fashion world need most?

Nate: Sample sizes that start at 2 or 3, not 00.

Giant: You’ve traveled quite a bit. What places have you been to? Any place in particular that you just adore?

Nate: South Africa is my favorite… I have to make a conscious effort to experience anything real in these places when I have so little time. I’m hoping this holiday season I get to go explore a new country more in depth than I’ve been able to before.

Giant: Have you picked up any skills in your travels?

Nate: I learn a little more patience and a few vocab words with every trip, but that’s really what my Christmas time will be about… Do awesome new friends in crazy cool places count as skills?

Giant: Have you allowed yourself to learn other cultures because of your ability to travel?

Nate: As much as I can. But I’m usually driven from the airport to the hotel to the set and back again without much in between.

Giant: It’s a recession. How are you making money in such a harsh socioeconomic zeitgeist as this?

Nate: I’m not the one who can answer that question, but by the grace of God I’m doing it, so I’m thankful every day.

Giant: Are casting directors and designers a lot harder than they were five years ago because of the recession?

Nate: It’s funny, when I came out here I didn’t know anything about this industry, everyone told me the recession would make it virtually impossible, but I shot Polo underwear the day I got here, and just celebrated my 2-year anniversary in New York during Fashion Week, I’m so blessed to be doing well.

Giant: What is the one thing you would change about the fashion world?

Nate: There are celebrities: actors/musicians, athletes, politicians, and then there are models. I think society gets a chance to see all other celebs lives and lifestyles besides models, I wish people had the opportunity to see the real side. People aspire to look like us but not be like us because no one knows who we are; they just see one or two mean, stoic faces. That’s not who I am as a person, but how could you know that?

Giant: It’s Fashion Week; will you be a part of any shows?

Nate: Yeah… Gilded Age, Phillip Lim, Micheal Bastian, and the notorious Tommy Hilfiger.

Giant: Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with?

Nate: I like all my jobs, but I favor the freedom of shooting an editorial like GQ.

Giant: Anyone in particular that you are not willing to work with?

Nate: Sure, and we don’t take pictures together.

Giant: Any labels or clients you’d be smitten to work with?

Nate: Totally. Victoria’s Secret, and Sports Illustrated… I’ll be an accessory for them anyday!

Giant: Anything you looking forward to this upcoming week?

Nate: The only thing I look forward to is the reunion! All my friends come into town, its like going back to the first day of school!

Giant: Anything in the future you’re excited about?

Nate: Everything! Its a new adventure each day. But I’m most excited to start broadening the horizons of my career and pursue my passion for acting.

Imagine if you will.

It’s Friday afternoon, and the streets are a blaze of black. The glitterati city slicker photographers stand in a perfect 180° on the subway platforms, like a line of a coke a mirror shard. Staring through plated glass, fashionistas copulate wordplay of their favorite obsession. Its was that time of the year again, New York’s Fashion’s Night Out and most importantly, its fashion’s night out. Rule of thumb, wear something black… or black-like.

Sean “Diddy” Combs blasts party crunk jams on a sight-seeing bus through 34th Street, his Sean John insignia below his B&W Herb Ritts-inspired mug in a white tuxedo on the side. Sexy women in skimpy outfits dance as spectators take pictures from the sidewalks of the assiduous fashion Mecca. Rock band Train tunes their guitars and rocks out to their signature jingles like “Soul Sister” at a Tommy Hilfiger tailgate soiree. And despite the saturated Technicolor of fabric swimming in the wind and neon lights swirling amidst the night air, it’s like a neo-cosmopolitan funeral for club kids and nu-vogue wild wunderkinds.

The second annual credit card chewing monster extravaganza involving 1,200 retail galas around the megacity began with rendezvous at Macy’s. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, designers Michael Kors and Rachel Roy, performer Jennifer Lopez, and actor Neil Patrick Harris were among the millions of shoppers. There were others all over the city: Magic was made with a performance by turntable gizmos N.E.R.D. and a surprise pop-and-lock cameo by former R&B poster boy Chris Brown and a warped recital by the cast of the Broadway musical “Hair.” Not to mention, there were tons of celebrity appearances by Michael Bloomberg, Serena Williams, Metric, Tyrese and Ludacris, producer Ryan Leslie and Japanese designer Nigo to name a few.

It was a grand ole time in the city and here are some trends we’d expect to see in this fall:

It’s fashion week. So, we decided we’d have our own Fashion Week at the offices. With the fashion world undergoing a black girl power supermodel renaissance anchored by Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, Selita Ebanks and Arlenis Sosa, it seemed less likely of a rise in black male models, let alone models of color. Somewhere, beyond the rainbow, came forth male models who were not your average Herculean beach bum Fabio Lanzoni-type with feathered tresses and a sun-kissed tan. These male models had melanin that soaked up starlight and had an edginess that blended rock n’ roll excess, punk revolt, urban swag and soft-core kink without batting an eye. Among them, Chavis Aaron is just that: A prime example of nu-vogue and urban decay; a photogenic chameleon able to shock and able to entice sex (a fashion favorite).

Talking to several male fashion models of color to discuss the fashion world and its ups and downs, race and culture, we get the skinny on the experience of being diverse in fashion. Recovering from a heavy night of intoxicating birthday debauchery, Aaron is the second of fashion beaus to bluntly tell us what is going on in the world of fashion beyond the runaway and share an insight to what he wants out of life.

Giant: How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure?

Chavis: I started modeling at 7 years-old, but I still feel like I have yet to (with emphasis) truly be “discovered.”

Giant: What was your first gig?

Chavis: My first gig was a local Indiana paper.

Giant: What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important?

Chavis: There’s no such thing as a trait you must have to model. Models are created based off being different. You have to bring a different look to the table, but a toned body is super important for male models

Giant: The modeling world is ruled by women mostly. Is it because they purchase more clothes or is it because menswear is so simple?

Chavis: I think it’s ruled by women because they are more open to fashion options and combos.

Giant: Other than modeling agencies RED and Benetton, there’s not a lot of diversity. What do you think the fashion world is missing?

Chavis: I think that the fashion world is missing equality between male models and female [models].

Giant: Some designers have stated they don’t design their clothes for black people like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Do they hire black models or have you been approached by a fashion house of this caliber?

Chavis: I have known these designers to choose black models for shows, but I still feel that it’s a “token” black model situation.

Giant: What do you feel about blacks and other minorities wearing the clothes?

Chavis: I think that its their choice to wear [the clothes] or not; I have no problem.

Giant: How do you feel about the opinion of male models being accessories in fashion shoots?

Chavis: I think its def. true that male models are just that, accessories. And [I] think that we have just the same to offer, talent-wise, as any one else.

Giant: What does the fashion world need most?

Chavis: The fashion world needs more of an open mind and ethnic understanding.

Giant: You’ve traveled quite a bit. What places have you been to? Any place in particular that you just adore?

Chavis: I love South Beach! The energy there is amazing. [I am] waiting for London, [that trip is] coming soon.

Giant: Have you picked up any skills in your travels?

Chavis: I have learned patience, organization, dedication, passion, and [a] strong work out habit.

Giant: Have you allowed yourself to learn other cultures because of your ability to travel?

Chavis: Unfortunately, I haven’t left the country yet.

Giant: It’s a recession. How are you making money in such a harsh socioeconomic zeitgeist as this?

Chavis: Yeah, modeling is not always easy. So, I also started two companies: C A Reaction, where we do Branding/Marketing/ Event planning, and also C A Reaction Staffing, where we staff other models for Bartenders/servers for events nationwide.

Giant: Are casting directors and designers a lot harder than they were five years ago because of the recession?

Chavis: Yeah, I think casting [is] a lot harder and [I] also [think] there is a lot more competition with the increase of new models from reality shows and [the] media push to want to become a model [is a] frenzy.

Giant: What is the one thing you would change about the fashion world?

Chavis: That it would be more diverse.

Giant: Its fashion week, will you be a part of any shows?

Chavis: This year, I felt as though I need[ed] a break, and [that I will] come back and hit the industry with a big bang!

Giant: Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with?

Chavis: I love working with new designers that just have the passion for what they do best—design.

Giant: Anyone in particular that you are not willing to work with?

Chavis: Never; I am an equal opportunity employee! (laughs)

Giant: Any labels or clients you’d be smitten to work with?

Chavis: I would love to be the face for D&G, Dsquared2, and Diesel.

Giant: Anything in the future you’re excited about?

Chavis: I’m excited to shoot a lot of new work including a calendar/website coming soon, so [be on the] look out!

It’s fashion week. That means high-octane fairyland thrills and sci-fi shock art frills! But when most people think of fashion, behind the sequined glitterball nirvana and heroin chic glamour, they are prone to think of the doe-eyed fair-skinned waifs in gorgeous lighting than the designers themselves. Rarely do that think of the towering, macho man metrosexual plastered in the background. And least likely, are they to think of the rainbow sherbet of ethnically diverse calender men and pin-up women.

Enter Paulo Pascoal. He’s one of the world’s stunning fashion monsters and cinema auteurs. Well-spoken, cultured, wise beyond his years and spellbinding, Paulo is a kindred spirit. After surviving a brain tumor, the proficient African arthouse pop musician from Angola, eminent for his torch songs, lost his eye brows and that signature corona of curly ebony locks of his after collapsing to find he was a diagnosed with cancer. Two years later, despite some weight loss, he’s the epitome of a Giant. And what does a giant to do? They lead.

Talking to several male fashion models of color to discuss the fashion world and its ups and downs, race and culture, we get the skinny on the experience of being diverse in fashion. Shooting a TV series over seas, Pascoal is the first of fashion beaus to shed his hide and take us on a journey behind the runaway. Ladies and gents, fasten your seat belts… its’ going to be a bumpy ride.

Giant: How were you discovered? What age were you? And how do you think you can get more exposure?

PP: I was discovered as a model when I was 15 years old, having coffee [in] downtown Lisbon-Portugal one afternoon by the French photographer Pierre Gonnord. He was working on his Terre de Personne exposition (“Terra Man,” “Earth person”) and invited me to [be] a part of it. Shortly after, I was approached by a model scouter that was visiting my school and landed in my first modeling agency. Exposure, I would like to get for the right reason and that would be by performing well in my assignments.

Giant: What was your first gig?

PP: I was 17 years old; it took me 2 years to decide whether I wanted to take part on the fashion world or not. Besides being very young, being a model [has] never been a part of my or my family’s plan. I had this tickling inside and I wanted to experience it, then my agent sent me over to Shanghai for the casting season and I finally booked my first campaign for Swatch Skin™.

Giant: What is the most attractive trait to have to be a professional model and why is it important?

PP: I think charisma; it doesn’t only matter how physically attributed you are, if you don’t have that energy that engages people, you may be good for a season and totally forgotten for the following one. Plus the strength and the capacity of transforming, adjusting and evolving with what you’re doing it’s really what keeps you on top of the game, enjoying it and being smart about it.

Giant: The modeling world is ruled by women mostly. Is it because they purchase more clothes or is it because menswear is so simple?

PP: Women definitely are bigger consumers than men, they always need something and they are not afraid of assuming it. Therefore, there’s a bigger need for options and that promotes the fashion for them. Men are more relaxed about it, that’s why menswear is simple: We still don’t dare to take risks in fashion and when we do, we’re easily picked on. But that is changing, although I don’t think we’ll ever be bigger than women, most fashion designers love dressing women.

Giant: Other than modeling agencies RED and Benetton, there’s not a lot of diversity. What do you think the fashion world is missing?

PP: Benetton has been a pioneer on diversity and RED is doing an amazing job with their models. More and more, we see commercial brands doing the same because it is important to be aware that if one wants to be successful, one needs to have people relate to our product. Using different ethnicities and races to showcase that, it is the best marketing a company can have. More than missing, I believe there’s more that could be improved.

Giant: Some designers have stated they don’t design their clothes for black people like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Do they hire black models or have you been approached by a fashion house of this caliber?

PP: Those designers attempted to cater to the urban audience, made lines geared towards it and blamed the black people for it’s failure. I still can’t believe how someone would say anything like that when Tommy Hilfiger still books one or two black models out of five for their campaigns, as used Beyoncé—a black icon for the fragrance “True Star” after that statement. Tyson Beckford, who is one of the most successful black male models of all time, is best known as a Ralph Lauren model. I’ve been to a Tommy’s casting and I’ve done a showroom a while back. I don’t know who’s to blame: a thriving model willing for a paycheck and a relevant campaign? The designers? Or the consumers? I guess that is part of the world of fashion.

Giant: What do you feel about blacks and other minorities wearing the clothes?

PP: I wanted to say that fair would be if all blacks and minorities stopped wearing those clothes, but I have to say that their clothes are affordable. You can find them really cheap in almost every outlet, they have some quality, so everyone is consciously free to place their judgment or not.

Giant: How do you feel about the opinion of male models being accessories in fashion shoots? What does the fashion world need most?

PP: Thinking that we are accessories is diminishing our value. The female may be the focus of the shoot but we are there too. I look at it as another job, that’s what’s important. You’re there; you’re a working model, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. I think that is exactly what the fashion world needs, is appreciating people as people and not as a publicity objects.

Giant: You’ve traveled quite a bit. What places have you been to? Any place in particular that you just adore?

PP: Yes, this is [the] year in particular [that] I’ve taken some time off to travel, after recovering from a cancer and I just love doing it, knowing new places, new cultures, meeting people from all over the world: It’s an amazing school… from South to North America, to Africa to Asia. I’ve recently arrived from a trip to France, Italy, Switzerland, [the] Netherlands, Germany and Poland. It’s been almost 2 weeks and I am still exhilarated with all the wonderful surprises that came my way, and the more I see, the more I want to see, as the more I know, the more I realize I know nothing… The world, the earth globe it’s an incredible place filled with wonder and amusement and I wish I could pick one place but I can’t. It’s right here, right now giving this interview to you that I adore being… I love New York and that is why I chose to live there, because it is the capital of the world and you have all that mixture of cultures and it always surprises you. (Pause) I would love to visit Australia, I haven’t been yet.

Giant: Have you picked up any skills in your travels?

PP: Oh, Yeah… I pack a lot faster (laughs). I learned to speak five different languages, I can be polite in a couple more, I’m really at ease with people and adapting myself to diverse surroundings, gosh…I don’t want to sound presumptuous, I’ve learned to keep things simple and respecting the place and belief of others.

Giant: Have you allowed yourself to learn other cultures because of your ability to travel?

PP: Most definitely, that only happens when you are right there among the other culture, because what’s normally internationalized about a culture, after you visit the place, it changes. That’s how I feel; there’s always a lot more to learn, details.

Giant: It’s a recession. How are you making money in such a harsh socioeconomic zeitgeist as this?

PP: I am not! (laughs) … Well, besides of modeling, I am a musician and an actor. The conjunction of the three has helped me manage my career in a way that I can afford to live a little better than check-by-check. I tend to travel to where the work is, and right now [that] is in Africa.

Giant: Are casting directors and designers a lot harder than they were five years ago because of the recession?

PP: Casting directors are always exigent, because they have to make sure that who they pick to represent a label is going to take it to the next level. There’re times they do that by choosing familiar faces: It’s safe, but as an organic movement, recessions bring a need for art and I’m so glad I can see a lot of new talent coming to live.

Giant: What is the one thing you would change about the fashion world?

PP: We are the fashion world, you, me, the readers… I couldn’t change it; I want to contribute more to it.

Giant: Its fashion week, will you be a part of any shows?

PP: Castings started 2 days ago, I still haven’t attended to any… because I am abroad, but hopefully I’ll get there just in time.

Giant: Is there a particular client that you are always happy to work with?

PP: Any client or yet to be, makes me happy to work with. I love this job.

Giant: Anyone in particular that you are not willing to work with?

PP: I couldn’t say that, I’ve always been well-treated.

Giant: Any labels or clients you’d be smitten to work with?

PP: So many, I hope they find me… I’m fully available.

Giant: Anything you looking forward to this upcoming week?

PP: Just the whole environment during the fashion week—the beautiful faces, the clothes, the new trends, the colors, the parties, the glamour, the lights, the active energy of hard workers—and the beginning of a whole new era after that.

Giant: Anything in the future you’re excited about?

PP: I’m excited about the future, whatever it reserves for me; it’s going to be great.

New artist Janell Monet has been gaining major buzz lately as one of the premiere artists to watch in 2010. She just released the video for the ‘Tightrope (Remix)’ featuring rappers B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco. While the video is definitely fresh, new and innovative in terms of Monet’s style, trademark dance moves and strong sense of individualism, it is clear that she draws inspiration from some of the best in the game. First take a look at the new video:

Here is a list of 4 people that we believe had a GIANT influence on Monae:

1.

Lauryn Hill

Monae is one of the very few artists that have been able to pull off rapping and singing on the same track. Her melodic voice is strong on its own, and is complimented by her sassy rhymes. She definitely reminds us of a young Lauryn Hill in her ability to artfully switch between the spoken and sung word.

2.

Andre 3000

Monae’ s quirky style and fancy dance moves undoubtedly have a hint of Andre 3000 in them. The master of quirk himself debuted similar looks and moves in the video for “Hey Ya.” Check it out:

It was a toss-up between Chris and Amy Winehouse, but the Monae-Bouffant is definitely a nod to those that have done it before. We’re glad that Janelle managed to make hers a little less hilarious, though.

4.

George Jefferson

(From Refinery29)

We recently started seeing Solange Knowles at our favorite bands’ gigs, rocking couture bunny ears, a luxe turban, and shoes so awesome, we could barely pay attention to the music—and the more we got to know the singer, the more we fell in love with her songs, her perspective, and—of course—her sensational style. Though she might have a super-famous older sister with whom she shares her Aphrodite-like looks and virtuoso voice, she’s definitely her own woman through-and-through. A mother, a sister, a daughter, an artist, musician, writer, and singer…Solange wears many hats, and channeled a bit of love from each of them to create her third studio album, to be released later this fall. We met up with Solange at The Standard Hotel to gain a little insight into how she maintains her inspired style.

Who are your style heroes?

“My mom in the ’70s and ’80s! She was a bad bitch. Sex and the City totally jacked her steez on the camels. I have a pic of her on a camel ride in Egypt in the ’80s serving the hell out of that desert! Also, Diana Ross, The Fela Kuti Queens, Björk, ’70s-era Chaka Khan, Chloë Sevigny, ’90s Erykah Badu.”

What’s your secret style weapon?

“Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe. Unfortunately, so many people get it right from the head until the ankles. The shoe is very important. I can’t even fuck with you if your shoe game is slacking.”

For more of Solange’s interview, go here!

Michael Jackson was more than the greatest musical legend of any recent generation; he was a fashion icon. He became known by one single accessory: the glove. Back in the day, that infamous red jacket was worn by many an older brother during their break-dancing phases. Later, the military jackets and face masks would become his staples. Recently, Jackson became noted by the fashionable powers that be for his love of Balmain; the embellished jackets and grand price tags were just up his alley. Let us take a look back at the original King of Style.

As the summer travel season gets into full swing, GIANT has put together a go-to-guide for those looking to hit the friendly skies in style.

We never want you to forsake fashion for comfort when you travel, ad conversely, perhaps Avant Guarde has no place in your tiny airplane seat. Need help toeing the fine line between frumpy and faux fabulous? We have created a visual guide for some simple dos and donts to help you have a fashionable voyage.

People found these pictures of your favorite celebs at the airport, and we’re telling you how to get the look. Check it out:

DO:

Keep yourself warm with a chic leather.

We all know how cold it can get on the airplane. Rather than packing your ratty old sweater, opt for a versatile leather. Stay stylish and comfortable in a thin but warm leather like Eva Longoria below:

Try this jacket by Vince:

Vince Draped Leather Jacket 995

DO:

Layer effortlessly

Mixing textures is always a good way to keep comfortable and warm on a long red-eye flight. David Beckham stays stylish by pairing a classic tee and a blazer with denim, and finishing off the look with a preppy cardigan casually thrown over the shoulders. This look will provide you with options and an instant cool factor.

You can find similar looks at Zara.com:

DO:

Choose comfortable monochromatic knits

Beyonce keeps it simple and chic in her tank and cargo pants. Her look is undoubtedly just as comfortable as it is fashionable. Jay is also keeping it simple and stylish by mixing denims, a huge trend this season.

We recommend these alternatives:

James Perse tank & BCBG Cargos

For Jay’s Look:

Union Contrast shirt & 7 For All Mankind Jeans

DO:

Keep it Classy but casual

Take a page out of Kylie Minogue’s book of style and rock a classic but comfy travel look. This simple jersey top paired with the voluminous tapered pant makes for a fabulously appropriate travel ensemble. Either heels or ballerina flats are wearable with this outfit, depending on your preference.

Try these pieces by Phillip Lim:

DON’T:

Stay away from ridiculously voluminous pieces.

Lady Gaga looks ridiculous in this get up. Perhaps it would have been fabulous and visionary on stage, but could you imagine having to sit next to this on a small airplane?

DON’T

Avoid excessive hardware

There’s no way Fergie-ferg had a relaxing trip covered in all of those grommets. Keep it simple while traveling to avoid looking overdone.

DON’T

Wear super tight pants.

Can you imagine sitting on a six hour flight in these super skinny jeans? Must suck to be Russel Brand.

DON’T

Wear your underwear to the airport.

Who knows who sat in that seat before Gaga. Furthermore, we feel sorry for the person who must sit in the seat after her. Overall, very tacky and even more unhygienic.

American Apparel is definitely a name in fashion that you are familiar with, as it has become hugely popular amongst the hipster crowd.

What the emerging brand specializes in is simple cotton wardrobe basics, marketed as cool sexy and “American.” Overall American Apparel’s clothing is underwhelming and excessively unimpressive comparatively, though the company is continuing to grow and expand to foreign markets. Why? We have three guesses, each equally unfathomable.

1.

Sex Sells

How do you get people to pay attention to ads for lack luster tees, tights socks and other such random nick-knacks? You infuse such ads with as much overt sexuality as possible. American Apparel is notorious for photographing its scantily and un-impressively clad models in compromising positions. Apparently this tactic is bringing in your attention as well as beaucoup sales. Here’s an example of a classic AA advertisement:

2.

Size 6 & Under

American Apparel has also come under fire recently for its failure to provide sizes larger than 6 in some items. According to Jezebel, if you are larger than a size 6, AA does not want your money. The popular brand does not manufacture some of its garments in larger sizes at all. Of course this has become a topic of consternation, being discussed by plus size proponents, fashion commentators and consumers alike, resulting in a ton of free publicity. If what they say about all publicity being good publicity, then American apparel is doing alright, size 8s or not.

3.

Natural Beauties Only

The final tactic that seems to be helping AA secure retail success is it’s strict hiring, and employee grooming practices. According to Gawker, American Apparel demands that its entire staff adapts to is stringent beauty standards. Here are a few of the rules staffers are expected to follow, as per a company e-mail sent out to store managers:

a) Makeup is to be kept to a minimal- please take this very seriously. Liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner and eyeshadow are advised against; mascara must look very natural (ie. should not be clumpy or a color that does not compliment your skin and haircolor). Blush must not be overdone- should not have glitter or sparkles. Liquid foundation is prohibited (undereye concealer is understandable if it looks natural- ie. not clumpy or caked on, must match your skin tone). Please do not use a shiny gloss on your lips; any lipcolor must be subtle.

b) Eyebrows must not be overplucked. Full eyebrows are very much encouraged. Please do not dye your eyebrows a different color.

c) We encourage long, healthy, natural hair, so please be advised of the following:

-Hair must be kept your natural color.

-Blow-drying hair excessively could cause heat damage, so this is advised against.

-”Bangs” or “fringe” are advised against. It is not part of the direction we’re moving in.

How many of you are hot enough to work at AA based on these standards alone? To read the entire company e-mail including the rules for men, go here. It seems as though AA believes that having a beautiful staff will equate to fiscal success.

We have always been and will continue to be underwhelmed by the illustrious American Apparel brand. As hip as it may be at the moment, we see the company’s initiative as superficial and trendy. Lets ee if its discriminatory practices and controversial selling point will withstand the test of time.

Take a look at some more of AA’s classy ad campaigns:

The emerging pop queen has set her standard for artistically weird imagery even higher with the visual accompaniment for "Alejandro." The video portrays Gaga in a whirlwind of pseudo-religious, homosexual, militaristic scenarios that don't seem to have any direct relation to the songs lyrics, but then again, since when does that matter. Our guess is, more than a few people are sure to be upset by the video. Here are a list of the people who are surely anti-Alejandro.

Lady Gaga’s much anticipated video for her newest single, “Alejandro” is here with no shortage of controversy.

The emerging pop queen has set her standard for artistically weird imagery even higher with the visual accompaniment for “Alejandro.” The video portrays Gaga in a whirlwind of pseudo-religious, homosexual, militaristic scenarios that don’t seem to have any direct relation to the songs lyrics, but then again, since when does that matter. Our guess is, more than a few people are sure to be upset by the video. Here are a list of the people who are surely anti-Alejandro.

1.

Christians

Any one who dons a habit without being a nun is automatically placed on the running anti-Christ list. And lady Gaga in all her fake-nun glory has just secured a top spot. Not only does she wear a latex version of the classic habit, but she is also pictured sucking on a rosary and engaging in homo-erogenous behavior. Yep, that’ll do it Gaga.

2.

Madonna

We have a sneaky suspicion that Madge is somewhere pissed that she is being swagger-jacked left and right by this new up-start. The whole blasphemy, short blond hair, military, gays thing has been done (by the material girl) many times; but hey, who’s counting?

3.

The “Gays”

Gaga is quoted as saying that the video is:

“a celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery, their love for one another and their courage in their relationships. In the video I’m pining for the love of my gay friends–but they just don’t want me to be with them.”

Still, the “gays” in her video are portrayed as over-sexed and preying on good little christian-Gaga. Who knows how she intended for us to interpret this video. In the end, her love and admiration for the “gays” may be lost amongst all of the groping.

4.

Katy Perry

Well, either she’s a lot more religious than we thought, or Katy’s just aiming a low blow at her competition. Either way we find it entertaining.

Sex and The City 2 is finally here and the fashion extravaganza has been stirring up buzz among the die-hard fans who have coveted the fiercely styled costumes since the series’ inauguration.

The premiere took place yesterday, appropriately in NYC, and the girls hit the red carpet dressed for a celebration. While we are all anticipating the theater opening of SATC2, we can indulge in the musing of Patricia Field, the film’s costume designer, and the woman single-handedly responsible for the fashion phenomenon that it has become.

Fields spoke candidly to NY Mag about the decisions leading up to the costume choices for the movie’s sequel. Take a look at a few of the stunning looks, as well as the reasoning behind them:

About the scene in the above photo, Patricia Field says:

“This is in the Middle Eastern desert in a tent. In the course of this desert jaunt that they do, they have three changes, which is really funny. This, to me, is giving you Sex and the City: the hysterical. Miranda’s dress is gorgeous, by the way — that dress is an antique. When I first met Cynthia Nixon at the beginning of the series, she said to me, ‘Pat, you’re the expert, I’m not into fashion, just dress me, I trust you.’ That was a compliment, but in a way it posed a problem, because…Read the rest here.
The J’adore Dior is a vintage piece, about ten years old, and it was just sitting there and we were like, ‘Where the hell are we going to use this?’ And that skirt is really a crinoline under a gown — it’s a slip, and it was beautiful. So I said, ‘Let’s use the slip as a skirt and do our Carrie, funk-it-up style with that Dior T-shirt…Read the rest here.

It's easy to feel restricted to the 3-piece paradigm often associated with casual menswear: shirt, jeans, sneakers.

Free yourself of the typical menswear confines and upgrade your wardrobe this season by putting a little swag in your step. Here are a few tips to help you get fresh by ditching the stale old trends of the past.

Free yourself of the typical menswear confines and upgrade your wardrobe this season by putting a little swag in your step. Here are a few tips to help you get fresh by ditching the stale old trends of the past.

1.

Not Skinny But Fitted

Here is one of the few times where medium trumps GIANT. When fitting yourself for new denims avoid the ultra-baggy and super-skinny jeans at all costs. For a more fashionable, and sophisticated look try a pair that actually fit (Gasp! What a notion…jeans that fit!). The trend in denim wear right now is a fitted leg, go ahead and give it a try.

The Slim Guy Jean in Natural Indigo Selvedge Men’s Denim By Naked & Famous 140

The Slim Jean in Rinse Men’s Denim By WeSC 78

The Weird Guy Jean in Vintage Blue Selvedge Men’s Denim By Naked & Famous 165

2.

A Tailored Suit

A tailored suit is the essential menswear piece this season. In particular the European style cut is a big hit in the fashion world, with every fashion house from Hugo Boss to Zara producing variations. The suit is no longer strictly for formal occasions and Sunday service. Pair your fitted suit with a simple tee and some boat shoes to make it work for an evening on the town or a casual lunch.

BOSS Black Sophisticated Two-Button Wool Suit 895

3.

Earth Tones

This season browns, greens and beige’s are making a comeback in a major way. Leave the neon’s to your accessories and try on a monochromatic, earth tone look. There’s nothing more sexy than subtlety in menswear.

Looks From:

Salvatore Ferragamo
Ermenegeldo Zegna
Bottega Venetta
Dolce & Gabbanna

4.

The Non-Nike

Nike’s are great, and classic and epic. We’ll give them that. But try to shake your footwear game up a little by venturing outside of the orange box. Try different types of shoes (ie a boot or a boat shoe), and give the sneaker a break. Dare to be different and uber-stylish by going for the non-nike.

POLO Rawlins Boot 416.50

5.

Accessorize

There is no better way to add pop to an outfit than by adding interesting accessories. Particularly in you are stuck in the 3-piece menswear model (shirt-jean-sneaker) a good accessory will instantly add another dimension to your look. Hats, belts, sunglasses, bracelets and watches all provide avenues for you to accessorize.

If you have yet to put a little bit of edge into your wardrobe, then your fashion repertoire is definitely in need of a few simple additions.

Its time to ditch the basic looks that you have been coasting by with. Be daring, be bold, and be fashionably exciting. The latest trend in the fashion microcosm is definitely “edgy.” If you’d like to indulge with out falling head over heel into a trend spiral, here are a few ways to upgrade your wardrobe for the times. Here is your guide to the pieces that will amplify your look, or just a few ideas to assist you on your way to building a fashionably formidable look that will take you from plain to daring in an instant.

1.

Vivid Colors

Add instant pop to your look by rocking a vivid color. Neon’s add an interesting, trendy edge to a particularly boring look.

Zac Posen Cornelia duchesse satin dress 1,795

Elizabeth and James Mason 285

Lisa Marie Fernandez Side Panel neoprene skirt 295

2.

Structure

Voluminous clothing will amplify your outfit instantly. Stray from the usual cuts, and go with garments that add volume in order to make your look more complex and fashionably edgy. Be careful not to choose clothing with volume in places that are not flattering for you.

Arden B One Shoulder Puff Sleeve Top 34

Matthew Williamson Chambray cotton jumpsuit 895

Black Katie Button Skirt 80 GBP

3.

Patterns

Geometric, floral or ethnic patterns are huge this season and provide a colorful flare to even the most simply cut garment. This is a great way to liven up your outfit, while staying with simple cuts that work well on your body, but are otherwise boring or uninspired. Tights in a geometric pattern instantly go from drab to edgy and fun.

Diane von Furstenberg Calida strapless printed dress 325

Marc by Marc Jacobs Dashiki Stripe jumpsuit 370

Sass & Bide The Likes Of You leggings 155

4.

Mix Textures

By mixing textures, you can automatically add more dimensions to your outfit. Choose garments that mix otherwise opposing textures such as silk and jersey in order to create a more dynamic look.

Alexander Wang Two-tone draped dress 395

5.

Accessorize

Wild accessories can take your look to the next level with minimal effort. A bold neck piece can transform even a plain white tee and a playful head band can change the mood of your entire look. Expand the value of basics by rotating trendy, outrageous accessories that will transform them.

Latex Flower Exclusive Headband, Benoit Missolin 150

Blackface has become a major point of contention in the fashion industry recently.

The tradition of blackface began as theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows to mock African-American culture. By painting their faces black, reddening the lip and wearing obnoxious accessories supposedly associated with "blackness," white actors would entertain audiences with outrageo... Read more..

The tradition of blackface began as theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows to mock African-American culture. By painting their faces black, reddening the lip and wearing obnoxious accessories supposedly associated with “blackness,” white actors would entertain audiences with outrageously racist shows of ‘comedy.’

Blackface since then has largely died as a socially acceptable form of entertainment. For that reason, whenever instances of blackface reappear in the media the question is automatically raised, is this an innocent form of artistic expression or a reference to the prejudiced roots of the minstrel history from which blackface was born.

Time and time again we have had to raise this question with regard to the fashion industry’s blackface-esque charades. French Vogue and V magazine and hit TV show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ have all experimented with black paint and white models over the past year to the tune of much criticism and debate. The newest fashion upstart to grab hold of the potentially racist blackface reigns is Paris-based Mongolian designer Tsolmandakh Munkhuu. The emerging designer covered and photographed her models in black paint from head to toe for the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography in the South of France this past weekend. The result? According to A Shaded View of Fashion, she was given a prestigious fashion award for her collection which included an all black repertoire of looks, skin included.

Some members of the press are referring to the painted models in Munkhuu’s show as an exhibit in “blackface.” Accordingly the question must once again be asked; art or racism?

Some sites, like BV.com suggest that Munkhuu’s show may have been more of a tribute to Viktor & Rolf, another fashion duo that got its start at the festival:

Dutch avant garde design duo Viktor & Rolf, who won the Hyères award when they were starting out, have also painted their models completely black for their shock-inducing runway shows for nearly a decade. Perhaps Munkhuu was just playing homage.

Viktor & Rolf

Still, is it OK that blackface is a continuing tradition in the fashion industry or should it be a decaying remnant of the pre-civil rights era?

Discuss.

Also, check out some other cases of possible fashion industry blackface:

This year, it was held in celebration of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new exhibit, American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. The well attended Gala was a smorgasbord of haute couture, with a particular focus on the American designers. We scoped out the event’s notoriously fashionable red-carpet and came across 9 essential elements of style. Take a look at what formal wear is looking like this season as per the biggest stars and designers, at the most glamorous event in the industry.

Grace Jones is hands down the originator of the new-school “different” that has taken over the pop scene.

Lately the biggest pop stars have been attaching an Avant garde flair to their look in attempts to be different, distinctive, or perhaps just more attention grabbing. Experimentation in fashion is the new black, with our favorite entertainers opting to go to stylistic extremes both on stage and in their own personal lives. Now that we have entered the era of Paparazzi, the streets have become appropriate territory for runway worthy couture looks a la Lady Gaga and her 2 foot tall horned headgear. Sure, it all feels new and exciting. But for the true high fashion aficionados, there is an air of familiarity to this trend. Ponder it enough, and your mind is sure to find itself at the root of daringly fashionable frocks and the F-you persona: a fearsome thing by the name of Grace Jones.

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. If that maxim is at all true then Jones should be highly flattered in light of the countless upstarts riding her outrageously haute couture coattails.

The brazen beauty recently did an interview with the Guardian in which she discussed Gaga as one of the many new artists referencing her iconic, distinctive style for their own benefit. Check out an excerpt from the interview below:

Any number of artists have asked to collaborate with her. Was Lady Gaga one of them?

“I just don’t play with other acts as a rule,” she says, with rare discretion.

What does she think of her? “I really don’t think of her at all. I go about my business.”

Has she copied her? “Well, you know, I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off.”

Is she talented? “I wouldn’t go to see her.”

So, did she ask to play with her? “Yes, she did, but I said no. I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually.”

In a world full of fakes, real always recognizes real, and GIANT recognizes Grace Jones as the originator of a style legacy that is still alive and well even in today’s mercilessly forgetful pop culture machine. Jones is a force to be reckoned with, and a hub for cheesy maxims. Nonetheless in her stylish honor, we leave you with this final one…often imitated but never duplicated. Grace, we think you’re the realist.

Take a look at your favorite pop star jockin’ Grace Jones.

Last year Jay-Z described himself as “So dope, like Louboutins with the red bottoms. You gotta have em, you’re glad you got ‘em.” True, 2009 was they year of the red sole. This year, however, the biggest trend in designer footwear is not so much the color of the heel, but more the shape.

Although spring has only just sprung, every real fashionista has already got her eye on fall fashion. Here is your formal introduction to the trends that will be taking hold of the most fashionable heels. Stash your classic six inch Louboutin shoe and prepare to take a fabulously precarious step as you ‘fall’ into these haute heel trends for 2010.

1

The Flared Heel

Say goodbye to the dainty tapered stilettos of yesteryear and add some volume to your heel. One of the hottest trends for fall 2010 is the flared heel. Beware, a thick heeled shoe is only for the brave hearted! Marni and Alexander Wang have integrated the triangular chunky heel to their shoe repertoire for fall in an amazing way.

2

The Curved Heel

Fashion aficionados got a taste of the curved heel last year with McQueen’s famed camel shoe, worn by mega fashion icons like Daphne Guinness, Kelis and Lady Gaga in her “Bad Romance” video. The Avant Garde look conjured up by the camel shoe lives on through the fall via the curved heel. Look to Nina Ricci and Marc Jacobs to set the example.

3

The Jeweled Heel

Add texture to your heels with some glam jewels. There is no better way to take your look from ordinary to extraordinary than by going with a glamorously rough jeweled surface across the base of a simple shoe’s heel. Louboutin has reinvented his classic shoes for the fall season by adding the bling factor, accordingly cranking the heat up higher than the heel itself on this stunning footwear.

4

The Carved Heel

The late Alexander McQueen already has a lasting style legacy established. Still, one of his last contributions to the avant guard fashion canon is the elaborately carved angel heel, which follows in the footsteps of Dior’s controversial, though hugely successful Goddess shoe. This particular shoe may be more of a collectors piece than a sidewalk-stomper, but nowadays with celebs like Rihanna and Gaga blurring the lines between art and fashion, is there really a difference?

5

The Chunky Wooden Heel

Once again we are seeing a departure from the typical slim heel that has dominated the most fashionable feet, season after season with this trend. The chunky heel is a bold statement piece that is totally appropriate for the fall season. The thick wooden heel is a cut away from the wedge, although it offers much of the same comfort and support.

Fall for these well-heeled shoes in the coming seasons:

Sessilee Lopez is a force to be reckoned with. In less than five years, she has made a name for herself as the young black ingenue blazing her way to the top echelons of a high-fashion industry that rarely opens its doors to women of color. She has most recently been asserting her authority on the runways at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, where she is among the most in demand models, and for good reason.

Sessilee recently did a GIANT photo shoot, and reestablished what it means to work for the camera. Watch her killer prowl and take lessons as Sessilee demonstrates how to be a model citizen. Tyra may have mastered smiling with her eyes, but Sessilee has definitely got the model frown on lock! Watch and take notes:

Take a look at Sessilee’s spread below:
