As gallery director of New York City’s Dietch Projects, Nicola Vassell must curate a look that is one part arty, one part slick and one part business. The Kingston, Jamaica, Native calls it “9-to-9 blended chic” — a sleek, statement-making mix that transitions seamlessly from day to evening. Although she regularly shops at luxe boutiques such as Kirna Zabete and Opening Ceremony, Vassell also scores stealer throwbacks online.
“You can find some really great vintage pieces on eBay,” she says, “someone who has a great trunk of clothing full of beautiful pieces for sale.” Her favorite labels? Vassell is batty for Balenciaga, crazy for Chanel and hot for Helmut Lang — all from designers who treat fashion like art, which is something Vassell can obviously appreciate. “I love great patterning, colors and well-textured fabrics,” she says. “There’s always something sculptured, like an art object in the form of a piece of clothing” – INDIA-JEWEL JACKSON
