Stephen Sprouse helped pioneer the mix between street art, music and fashion. An ’80s New York City darling, he used day-glo, graffiti-prints and silk screen to create clothing that was inspired by the ’60s, had a very ’80s futuristic flair and feels most appropriate today. Sprouse interned with Bill Blass, worked for Halston and hung out with Andy Warhol. The Punk inspired designer even dressed Debbie Harry, Duran Duran and Billy Idol. He collaborated with Target, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and also served as a costume curator for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Sprouse died in 2004 but his legacy lives on with new collaborations of his work with Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and “Rock on Mars” an exhibit of his work at Deitch Projects in New York (from Jan. 9 to Feb. 28).
