The War on Drugs: Wagonwheel Blues (Secretly Canadian)

This Philadelphia group is one of my favorite surprises of the year, one of those rare finds from the stacks and stacks of promotional CDs in my apartment that’s actually worth a few (hundred) spins. Check my previous write-up about The War on Drugs and listen to the group’s best song, “Taking the Farm.” After seeing the group live a few times throughout 2008 and noticing several areas for improvement on their stage show (timing, breaks, tuning instruments, setting up songs), I’m quite excited to think that such an already stellar band has even more room to grow. This album is damn good. But I can’t wait for the next one.
