Most Underrated Movies of ‘08: #6
Doomsday
Neil Marshall won a lot of acclaim (deservedly so) for his excellent horror flick The Descent a few years back. Unfortunately, his latest grindhouse-ready flick Doomsday was largely met with snorts of derision when it hit theaters back in March. I’m not quite sure why Marshall’s fair-weather fans abandoned him on this one. Sure, it’s not quite up to the level of The Descent, but if you’re a fan of old-school exploitation flicks, particularly those that deal with apocalyptic futures (i.e. Escape From New York and The Road Warrior), Doomsday is a lot of fun to watch. Star Rhona Mitra sets the movie’s badass tone, stalking around in a tight leather ensemble refusing to take crap from anyone. She’s the female version of Snake Plissken, minus the eye patch. And, much like Escape from New York, Doomsday will probaby go on to acquire a bunch of fans through endless late-night showings on cable TV.
