These days, the world is quite literally at out fingertips. Cellphone apps have become the medium of choice for everything from soial networking to planning a fabulous night on the town. Now, it seems that the world of fashion is making its way out of the glossies and into the lcd screen of your phone via a set of new apps designed specifially to keep you stylish on the go. As if the recent boom of internet bloggers wasn’t enough to unhinge the magazine’s monopoly on fashion, apps are next in line to cause an upraor in the industry that once looked only to editorials as the authority on all things style. NY Mag put together a top ten list of the best fashion apps available; need a wardrobe lesson? There’s an app for that. Check them out:

“What is ‘apps?’” Christian Louboutin once asked a writer at The Wall Street Journal, before admitting, “I’m a very bad technician. Technology, zero.” Of course, Louboutin isn’t the only Luddite in the fashion industry, whose frosty attitude toward all things tech is just starting to thaw. As more designers warm to the idea of e-commerce, they’re also getting hip to the smartphone frontier. Several biggies have rolled out iPhone apps to show off their collections, and, in rarer instances, allow users to shop. And just last week, eBay, which pretty much has the web-retail sector cornered, introduced a free fashion app, which allows users to browse and purchase more than 20 million fashion items, as well as “try on” clothes and build virtual closets.

We sifted through the glut of fashion-centric apps to see which ones are worth your precious downloading time; click ahead to see our top ten picks for the iPhone. (Sorry, Android users, but your options are still limited. Download nymag.com’s free blog app for now and pray that all those pretentious iGeeks get their just desserts in an Apple recall.)

Chicfeed

This bare-bones app pulls photos from some of the Internet’s most respected style blogs, including the Sartorialist, Face Hunter, and Lookbook. The sorting functionality — or lack thereof — leaves something to be desired, but if you’re just seeking quick-hit eye candy, there’s no better way to see loads of style snaps all in one spot. The app is available two ways: free with advertising or 99 cents without.

Diane Von Furstenberg

While many designers with apps remain skeptical about mobile commerce, Von Furstenberg told W, “We already do so many things from our phones, so shopping is a natural progression.” Accordingly, DVF’s app allows users to shop via a “Looks We Love” section or by thumbing through the collections — albeit not 24/7. (Our nighttime request to purchase a one-shoulder floral dress wasn’t addressed until regular business hours.) Still, DVF gets props for rounding out the app with Facebook-sharing capabilities and access to her Twitter feed.

Gap StyleMixer

This innovative brand app allows you to mix and match Gap items with pieces already hanging in your closet. Create outfits using uploaded photos or use the “Mixer” to browse Gap products and create head-to-toe new looks. Shake your phone and the Mixer will generate a random combination of pieces, including shoes and accessories. The “Community” function allows you to share your uploaded looks, as well as check out combos other app users are creating. On the downside, if you’re near a Gap location, you can also supposedly “unlock” a special promotion on your phone; we tried, but were lamely told to “check back soon for a new offer.”

Glamour Ask a Stylist

Wang or Wu? Jeggings or jorts? Dr. Scholl’s with socks or without? These are the types of pressing sartorial questions one might bounce off a trusted friend — or one of Glamour’s on-call app stylists. Here’s how it works: Browse their mini-bios (some are from glamour.com, others from Craigslist), choose the one most up your aesthetic alley, upload your outfit pic and/or inquiry, and wait. Our selected stylist responded to our day-to-night dilemma fifteen minutes after we fired off our request. And, in true women’s-mag fashion, we were given an extra boost of confidence (“You’ll look awesome wherever you go!”). A solid bet for the indecisive.

iShoes

Scroll through more than 50,000 kicks in the shoe-porn Finder, or search the sea of shoes by style and designer. The app indicates which pairs are on sale and connects you straight to buy-it-now retailers. The app is free, functional, and offers decent-size closeups of each item, though we hope its creators introduce better browsing filters (like color, size, heel height, material, etc.) with the next update.

The single girl lifestyle has always been an interesting conversational topic.

Whereas single life for women was once viewed simply as life without a man in the same cut and dry way that the non-color black is described as the absence of light, things have since changed. Now the single life is not viewed as a simple existence, in absence of the male element. Now, the single lady is a celebrated entity, symbolizing freedom, independence and overall fabulousness. While mega stars like Beyonce have helped to glamorize the title (all my single ladies!), a new book by Sam Wasson argues that the dawning of the single girl  began with a Givenchy dress, a danish and a single lady by the name  of Holly Golightly gazing into the iconic Tiffany window.

Taking the single girl out of the context of promiscuity and making her lifestyle desirable was the task that the movie successfuly  took on. In the book entitled, “Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman,” Wasson states:

With the release of Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961, being a single woman with an active sex life was suddenly a condition to aspire to. (Helen Gurley Brown’s Sex and the Single Girl wasn’t released until 1962.) “Before Hepburn, there was the prude and the slut, and the reality of in-between had no cinematic correlation,” says Wasson. “If Monroe had played her, she would have just been a hooker. That was when I got the power of the movie, and the genius of casting Audrey Hepburn.”

Today we continue to celebrate this lifestyle as one of choice, and not one of disadvantage. What Golightly created, figures like Carrie Bradshaw have perfected.

Kanye West is an enigma of epic proportions. For certain he is one of the most unique characters in the music business, though it seems his quirkiness has peaked as of late. Between the on-stage melt downs, the bald headed barbie (ex?) girlfriend and the one-of-a-kind sense of style, we are left wondering, ‘where does West’s eccentricity come from?’

Kanye seems more akin to a mad-genius-music-scientist than the run-of-the-mill rapper, and for that we are ever-intrigued.

After a long hiatus following the Taylor Swift-MTV Awards debacle, Kanye has reemerged with a single that is tearing up airwaves. “Power” is West’s catchy return to rap, post the era of “Heartbreaks and 808′s.” While the song is acoustically appealing enough to ride the wave of success straight to the top of the charts, we are a bit bothered by its message. Hearing West agonize about the woes of “one man having all this power” over the hymn-like lulling of a gospel choir is eerily ominous. Add the references to a “beautiful death” from his proposed “Jumping out the window, ” and Kanye has managed to throw us into a full blown panic. Is “Power” merely an egotistical testament to West’s accomplished stature laced with his signature ef-you attitude, or the mark of a troubled genius struggling with the responsibilities of new-found power?

We decided to use the lyrics of “Power” as the means by which we take a stab at the complicated question of “Whats bugging Kanye West?”

We just can’t lame the man for being upset and feeling bamboozled! There was also this set, in which the cast sarcastically blasted West for his exorbitant effort to defend Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”:

A: This seems like Kanye’s way of giving peole what he thinks they want. Since h obviously feels like he’s important enough to be crucified by the public, he’s throwig his hands up and giving ua a ‘beautiful death.’ Well Kanye, thats not what we want. Just keep making good music and cooky life decisions.

Now that all of the Lebron whoopla is over, we-in true New Yorker fashion-are back to bitter. Sure, we were into the whole thing in the beginning, but now that we’ve had time to really sit and think about it, Lebron’s not all that anyway. The basketball’s most popular free-agent was being courted by every wannabe-power team in the nation over the past few weeks, only to choose the Miami Heat as his new home-team. Can we blame Lebron for rejecting NY and refusing to go down with a sinking ship? No. Are we upset anyway? Yep. Here are 5 reasons why us New Yorkers are hating on the King’s big decision.

1.

“The King” Has Nothing On Kobe

While the entire country is going gaga over King James, Kobe remains comfortably seated on the b-ball throne. Kobe has more than proved himself as a winner, yet James is still struggling to build his resume. As the NY Post put it, Lebron has the “it factor,” but lacks the wins to back it up:

LeBron has it even if hasn’t won anything yet except one Eastern Conference title and one trip to the NBA Finals. Kobe Bryant is currently the official crowned king of the NBA, you bet he is. He has five NBA titles, two in a row, he finally beat the Boston Celtics a couple of weeks ago, which for a Laker is like becoming a made man in the mob.

So the final verdict is, he wouldn’t have been that great for us anyway.

Only The Strong Survive

They say that “if you can make it here, you’ll make it any where.” Well, we have a strong suspicion that Lebron wasn’t too sure whether he could make it in the apple.  While we all looked to him as the trump card for the flailing Knicks, it seemed that the pressure was to great. It was a challenge of Jordan proportions and Lebron just wasn’t ready to step his game up. Its ok though, James, you’ll probably be better of with your Miami crutches teammates anyway. Once again the Post puts it best:

New York would have meant pressure. Staying in Cleveland would have meant pressure and as we know LeBron, unlike Ewing, cannot handle the pressure.

Money In The Bank

In light of the recent budget cuts taking place in NYC schools and public services, blowing hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars on a ball player seems highly unreasonable. Whether or not the salary proposed to Lebron for his tenure with the Knicks has anything to do with NYC budgeting (which we doubt), spending astronomical amounts on one player just does not appeal to us anymore.

Gridlock

The only thing New Yorkers hate more than cowards is traffic. Can you imagine the gridlock surrounding Madison Square Garden that would result from the rush of new fans headed to Knick games (Not to mention the train congestion)? Thanks but no thanks!

Thou Art Not God

We think the whole chalk-dust-in-the-air thing is ridiculous. Perhaps our initial bids to plant the King James movement in NYC added to the God complex that Lebron is undoubtedly developing, but hopefully this new bitterness0after-rejection will bring him back down to size.

Ok all bitterness aside, Lebron is a great player that will thrive in any environment. Yea, we’re mad he didn’t pick us, but we respect the fact that he’s taking Miami to the next level, and was brave enough to go against the grain, choosing the Heat, which no one expected. We’re mad, but we’ll get over it!

New artist Janell Monet has been gaining major buzz lately as one of the premiere artists to watch in 2010. She just released the video for the ‘Tightrope (Remix)’ featuring rappers B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco. While the video is definitely fresh, new and innovative in terms of Monet’s style, trademark dance moves and strong sense of individualism, it is clear that she draws inspiration from some of the best in the game. First take a look at the new video:

Lauryn Hill

Monae is one of the very few artists that have been able to pull off rapping and singing on the same track. Her melodic voice is strong on its own, and is complimented by her sassy rhymes. She definitely reminds us of a  young Lauryn Hill in her ability to artfully switch between the spoken and sung word.

Andre 3000

Monae’ s quirky style and fancy dance moves undoubtedly have a hint of Andre 3000 in them. The master of quirk himself debuted similar looks and moves in the video for “Hey Ya.” Check it out:

It was a toss-up between Chris and Amy Winehouse, but the Monae-Bouffant  is definitely a nod to those that have done it before. We’re glad that Janelle managed to make hers a little less hilarious, though.

Good old George is definitely the originator of the ‘good-foot’ dance. Check out a master at work:

Lady Gaga is always going to the extremes in order to maintain her Avant Guarde image. While this can easily be viewed as her attempt at remaining relevant, interesting and popular, a recent shoot may have proven that the theatrics are not necessary in her quest to do so. In what we consider her most interesting photo shoot to date, Gaga poses as a man, channeling a more suave, toned down, androgynous image of herself. The images will be featured in Vogue Hommes Japan. Take a look at the shots below:

Being that Gaga is bisexual, perhaps this shoot was merely an ode to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual community with which she identifies. On the other hand, it may be evidence that Gaga is not merely a fame mongering pop star pushing the limits of entertainment simply for the sake of album sales, but rather a truly insightful artist pushing the limits of creativity.

Car & Driver has already gotten a hold of the 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible. After taking the coveted luxury car for a spin, the reviews are in! Take a look at what the premiere automobile magazine had to say about the newest Bentley drop-top to hit the streets:

Meet The Beast

Bentley already has superhero-level Continentals in the family—the Speed versions of the GT, Flying Spur, and GTC—but the Supersports models are more thoroughly changed beasts.

2.

Not Bigger But Better

This particular model takes the Bentley Continental GTC (GT Convertible), strips out nearly 200 pounds, drops the suspension 0.4 inch and stiffens it by up to 33 percent, and wrings another 21 hp out of the 6.0-liter W-12 engine. Weight primarily comes out of the seats, brakes, and wheels. At 5400 pounds or so, it’s still hardly light, but 621 hp does a fine job of overcoming the mass.

Speed Redefined

Bentley claims 0-to-60 mph should take 3.9 seconds. Like all members of the Continental family, this convertible is relaxed and tremendously composed at supersonic highway speeds. It’s just that it gets to those speeds more quickly, and can maintain them through tighter turns and with greater composure. While the push of 590 lb-ft of torque is never subtle, brief turbo lag and all-wheel drive mean the first half-second or so of this Bentley’s launch is a bit soft. Where it really impresses is at higher speeds, when the 621 hp batter aerodynamics into submission and the car continues to pull to ludicrous velocities. Bentley claims a top speed of 202 mph.

Show Stopper

Heavy cars at high speed need good brakes, and Bentley claims the carbon-ceramic units it fits to the Supersports are the most powerful binders currently fitted to any passenger car—at 16.5 inches up front, they are certainly supersized. Although the pedal feels spongy, the immediacy with which the brakes haul the car down from speed will have your ribcage feeling spongy as well.

Impressive Inside-Out

The cabin is swaddled in tactile treats, with Alcantara everywhere, including the carbon-fiber bucket seats. While manually adjusting thrones in a Bentley may seem appalling, those seats are responsible for 90 pounds of the Supersports’s weight reduction. The coupe benefits further from the loss of its rear seats, but in the convertible, those seats house the rollover protection hoops. Even if Bentley had removed the cushions, the structure hidden in the headrests would still have to be there, so engineers just left the seats

On the outside, the Supersports convertible gets the same visual enhancements as the coupe: additional apertures in the front fascia and hood for better airflow, the sinister black wheels, and a lip on the rear fenders to cover the widened—by two inches—rear track. The net effect is menacing, an adjective not often employed in Bentley reviews. And, with contrasting piping and quilting highlighting the Alcantara interior, the car looks just as good from the inside as outside.

6.

Exclusivity

The company plans to import just 80 convertibles this year. That’s probably not so much a function of price—the Supersports adds about another $50,000 on top of the Speed’s sticker, for a base price of $286,695—as it is a reaction to the altered character of what used to be essentially a private bullet train.

Final Verdict?

While the Supersports is certainly very capable, it does neither luxury nor sport as well as other $300,000 cars, and it’s highly unlikely someone spending this much on a car needs one vehicle to fill both of those roles. If you’re going to spend $300,000 on a luxury car, Bentley’s own Mulsanne is far more fabulous than the Supersports. If it’s a sports car you seek, the Italians have some fine vehicles for you. And if what you really want is just something unexpected, that sum might also buy you your very own WhirlyBall arena.

I have a pic of her on a camel ride in Egypt in the ’80s serving the hell out of that desert! Also, Diana Ross, The Fela Kuti Queens, Björk, ’70s-era Chaka Khan, Chloë Sevigny, ’90s Erykah Badu.”

What’s your secret style weapon?

“Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe. Unfortunately, so many people get it right from the head until the ankles. The shoe is very important. I can’t even fuck with you if your shoe game is slacking.”

If anyone has ever told you that riding bikes were exclusively for kids and broke hippies, they obviously have not seen or heard of pro BMX (bicycle motocross) rider, Nigel Sylvester. At 22-years-young, the Queens native is reshaping the view of street riding, a skill that has typically been looked over in the sports arena. Now, Nigel has caught the attention from one of his major sponsors, Nike, along with being sponsored by Gatorade, Animal Bikes, and Dance Competition. Nigel was recently photographed by pro photographer, Barron Claiborne (who’s most noted for photographing the iconic image of Biggie Smalls with the crown on his head) for an exclusive photo shoot just for Afropunk.com.

When we spoke to Nigel, he was in California getting ready to film a commercial with Nike and briefly spoke to us about the 2010 Afro-punk Festival’s skate competition, Battle for The Streets (in which he will be one of the judges alongside Edwin Delarosa).

AfroPunk: So what are you looking to the most at the Afro-punk festival this year?

Nigel: Well, I’m just going to take it in fully. I’ve never been to the Afro-punk festival and I keep hearing about how I would like it. I’m just going to sit back and take it all in.

AP: Well, you won’t just be sitting back, I have to see you live and in action for real. You have to be like the tough judge during the Battle of the Streets skate competition.

N: Ha. Yea, I’m going to be doing the judging too. Seeing what comes out. It’s like, Afro-punk brings something different to the community. You see it all the time in the streets, but seeing everyone together should be cool…

There are a slew of new  rappers taking the game by storm as of late. First up, Canadian-import Drake knocked the proverbial ball right out of the album-sales-park, selling 462,989 copies of his much anticipated album in its first week. Who’s next to bat? We’re guessing hot new artist J. Cole. With the release of his new single “Who Dat,” Cole is using his underground buzz and his sizzling new video to catapult himself from the underground sector into rap’s upper echelons. Oh, you didn’t know? We’re about to put you onto this future GIANT.

Here are five interesting things you should know about J. Cole:

Roots

J. Cole was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is bi-racial having been born to a Black mother and a White father.

Unorthodox

J.Cole decided to attend college in New York City in order to place himself at the apex of the city’s thriving music industry. He attended St. John’s University on an academic scholarship, majored in communication and minored in business. In a largely unorthadox move for a hip hop artist, Cole graduated magna cum laude. If you thought Kanye’s “college dropout” steez was hot, then college graduate is definitely the new black.

3.

Flagship Artist

Cole is the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation. A major accomplishment indeed.

Big Backing

Cole has managed features on tracks with many of today’s httest artists. He appeared on Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint 3, on the track “A Star Is Born,” and Wale’s debut album, Attention Deficit in the song “Beautiful Bliss.” Cole has also stated that he worked with producers such as No I.D., Pharrell, Jim Jonsin and Salaam Remi for his upcoming debut album.

The rap-beef between Rick Ross and 50 Cent has been brewing since January of 2009, when Ross threw shots at 50 on his single “Mafia Music.” On the track that would eventually spark an all out rap war, Ross states:

“I love to pay her bills/can’t wait to pay her rent/Curtis Jackson baby mama/I aint askin for a cent/Burn the house down/gotta buy another/don’t forget the gas can/jealous, stupid muthafu****”

What ensued after that was a series of angered responses from both parties in what can either be considered a clash of two rap titans or a masterfully executed sales scheme cooked up to grab the consumers’ attention.

Throughout the unraveling beef, 50 made it his business (quite literally) to expose Rick Ross’ correction officer past, capitalize on “the Bawse’s” disgruntled and vengeful baby mama, and discredit his rival rapper by any means necessary. While 50 was very successful in periodically ruining Ross’ image, the sizable rapper is still around dropping hits. This leads us to wonder, has Rick Ross survived the massacre?

When 50 went after Ja rule (remember him?) he managed to take him down completely. Despite a few failed comeback attempts, we still have yet to see Rule reemerge as a real player in the music game. Ross, however, despite the destructive force of 50, is still at it.

He most recently dropped videos for these two fabulous tracks:

True, we thought it was a wrap for Ricky when 50 started dropping bombs on his faltering reputation. But somehow, the (former) officer has been able to hold tight to his spot. 50 may very well have won the battle, but its seems that Ross has emerged from the greater war unscathed.

As the popular maxim goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.” Even after having his business (whether true or not aired out for the world to see by the resourceful 50 cent, Ross is still dropping hits and making numbers that count in the music industry. Currently Ross appears three times on Billboard’s list of the week’s top 20 rap songs for “All I Do Is Win,” “Hello, Good Morning, ” and  “Super High.” 50 appears nowhere on the same list.

When all is said and done, both are great artists who deserve their space in the music stratosphere. Still, we think that in this war, Ross’ longevity has proved him victorious. As the dust settles on this beef, both men remain standing but the fact that Ross is able to do so in spite of the arsenal that 50 unleashed against him is truly impressive.

The Battle Continues For Kanye and 50

Ever wonder how some emerging artists rocket straight to the top of the game while others-irregardless of talent or hard work-just flounder around never really connecting with the path to music stardom?

Case in point: industry newcomer Drake Aubrey Graham. In a matter of a year, Drake has skyrocketed to the top. The particularly popular rapper/singer has conquered both the charts and the hearts of his loyal following since the quiet release of his second mixtape, “So Far Gone” in February 2009. Since then Drake has taken the music industry by storm, scoring major endorsements by the game’s biggest figures (ie. Lil Wayne and Jay-Z), a record deal, and the mass exposure that even some industry vets struggle to attain. Similar success is evident in the blossoming career of Drake’s label mate Nicki Minaj, who is quickly becoming the female rapper to reckon with.

Perhaps the biggest breakout comes from a young import by the name of Rihanna. Although Riri debuted to mediocre popularity, when she finally did managed to break out, she did it in a huge way. Rihanna is now one of the biggest international stars, as famous for her swagger as she is for her catch pop catalog.

With that said, we are left wondering ‘whats the secret?’ How is it that these artists make it big while the vast majority see short-lived, medium success if any? We’ve pondered the question and come up with a few necessities for making it big in music. Wanna be a GIANT like Drake? Start here:

1.

Talent

Talent is arguably the least important factor in terms of stardom. If you are in fact lucky enough to have some talent however, the cards are stacked in your favor. Conversely, however, unadulterated talent does not in any way guarantee success. Some of the most famous and successful people in the industry today are totally lacking any discernible talent. We also recommend that you double up on your talents. Those that sing and do something else (think: dance, rap, act etc.) tend to have double the success. If you are looking to be a future GIANT, start with your talent, or what you believe to be your talent and work your way from there.

2.

Distinctive Look

It is often said that image is everything in the music industry. All of the most powerful figured in music have a look that is as distinctive as their sound.Perfect your image and then proceed to the next step.

3.

Swag

Paramount to any artists success is a swag that is jackable. If no one wants to look like you, you’re probably not that hot. On the other hand if you can inspire a nation of wannabes and followers, you’ve just given your aforementioned “distinctive look” some actual currency.

4.

Cross-Over

One of our favorite pictures of Drake features him neatly groomed, set in an autumn backdrop wearing a classic pea coat; so not hip hop. Nonetheless, he is at the top of the hip hop charts, dropping successive chart toppers with the best of them. On the smash hit “Forever” Drake spits:

Labels want my name beside the X like Malcolm
everybody got a deal, I did it without one,
yeah n-gga I’m about my business,
killing all these rappers you would swear I had a hit list,
everyone who doubted me is asking for forgiveness

Although he has mastered the hip hop rapping rudiments, Drake also has harnessed the power of cross-over appeal. It is important to be able to reach multiple markets and most breakout artists have managed to do so. Want to be famous? Think outside the box.

5.

Back Up

A huge part of breakout success is owed to an artists backing. Having a mega star to cosign your hotness is always beneficial. Many of our biggest stars at the moment had a helping hand along the lines of Jay, Wayne, Baby or some other power player.

6.

Sex Appeal

Sex sells, and today’s biggest stars are selling it! Unfortunately for some, sexiness is another huge factor in determining ones star potential. This is particularly true with regard to women. Whereas many of our most talented stars need not consider this factor, most of our most successful are capitalizing solely on their sex appeal.

The ceremony, which will be held Thursday in New York City, celebrates songwriters, for their accomplishments and for being an inspiration to their fellow colleagues.

“Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world’s Popular Music soundtrack,” Chairman/CEO Hal David said in a statement. “We are looking forward to another memorable evening where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments.”

According to the Huffington Post, Sao Paulo Fashion Week produced numerous shows in which designers sent stylish swimsuits down the runway for Spring-Summer 2010-2011. For an issue of GIANT our fashion team selected the hottest models on the scene right now and brought them together with super-glam photographer Mark Squires. The results are sizzling…

American Apparel is definitely a name in fashion that you are familiar with, as it has become hugely popular amongst the hipster crowd.

What the emerging brand specializes in is simple cotton wardrobe basics, marketed as cool sexy and “American.” Overall American Apparel’s clothing is underwhelming and excessively unimpressive comparatively, though the company is continuing to grow and expand to foreign markets. Why? We have three guesses, each equally unfathomable.

1.

Sex Sells

How do you get people to pay attention to ads for lack luster tees, tights socks and other such random nick-knacks? You infuse such ads with as much overt sexuality as possible. American Apparel is notorious for photographing its scantily and un-impressively clad models  in compromising positions. Apparently this tactic is bringing in your attention as well as beaucoup sales. Here’s an example of a classic AA advertisement:

Size 6 & Under

American Apparel has also come under fire recently for its failure to provide sizes larger than 6 in some items. According to Jezebel, if you are larger than a size 6, AA does not want your money. The popular brand does not manufacture some of its garments in larger sizes at all. Of course this has become a topic of consternation, being discussed by plus size proponents, fashion commentators and consumers alike, resulting in a ton of free publicity. If what they say about all publicity being good publicity, then American apparel is doing alright, size 8s or not.

3.

Natural Beauties Only

The final tactic that seems to be helping AA secure retail success is it’s strict hiring, and employee grooming practices. According to Gawker, American Apparel demands that its entire staff adapts to is stringent beauty standards. Here are a few of the rules staffers are expected to follow, as per a company e-mail sent out to store managers:

a) Makeup is to be kept to a minimal- please take this very seriously. Liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner and eyeshadow are advised against; mascara must look very natural (ie. should not be clumpy or a color that does not compliment your skin and haircolor). Blush must not be overdone- should not have glitter or sparkles. Liquid foundation is prohibited (undereye concealer is understandable if it looks natural- ie. not clumpy or caked on, must match your skin tone). Please do not use a shiny gloss on your lips; any lipcolor must be subtle.

b) Eyebrows must not be overplucked. Full eyebrows are very much encouraged. Please do not dye your eyebrows a different color.

c) We encourage long, healthy, natural hair, so please be advised of the following:

-Hair must be kept your natural color.

-Blow-drying hair excessively could cause heat damage, so this is advised against.

-”Bangs” or “fringe” are advised against. It is not part of the direction we’re moving in.

We have always been and will continue to be underwhelmed by the illustrious American Apparel brand. As hip as it may be at the moment, we see the company’s initiative as superficial and trendy. Lets ee if its discriminatory practices and controversial selling point will withstand the test of time.

Lady Gaga’s much anticipated video for her newest single, “Alejandro” is here with no shortage of controversy.

The emerging pop queen has set her standard for artistically weird imagery even higher with the visual accompaniment for “Alejandro.” The video portrays Gaga in a whirlwind of pseudo-religious, homosexual, militaristic scenarios that don’t seem to have any direct relation to the songs lyrics, but then again, since when does that matter. Our guess is, more than a few people are sure to be upset by the video. Here are a list of the people who are surely anti-Alejandro.

Any one who dons a habit without being a nun is automatically placed on the running anti-Christ list. And lady Gaga in all her fake-nun glory has just secured a top spot. Not only does she wear a latex version of the classic habit, but she is also pictured sucking on a rosary and engaging in homo-erogenous behavior. Yep, that’ll do it Gaga.

Madonna

We have a sneaky suspicion that Madge is somewhere pissed that she is being swagger-jacked left and right by this new up-start. The whole blasphemy, short blond hair, military, gays thing has been done (by the material girl) many times; but hey, who’s counting?

3.

The “Gays”

Gaga is quoted as saying that the video is:

“a celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery, their love for one another and their courage in their relationships. In the video I’m pining for the love of my gay friends–but they just don’t want me to be with them.”

Still, the “gays” in her video are portrayed as over-sexed and preying on good little christian-Gaga. Who knows how she intended for us to interpret this video. In the end, her love and admiration for the “gays” may be lost amongst all of the groping.

Katy Perry

Katy said it herself via Twitter:

Well, either she’s a lot more religious than we thought, or Katy’s just aiming a low blow at her competition. Either way we find it entertaining.

The rock movement marked the birth of the rockstar. These unique individuals became the face of rock music, easily identified by their incomparable look, sound and attitude. In case you’ve been living uder a rock, Apple founder Steve Jobs debuted the new iPhone today.

As usual Apple is killing the cell phone game with its newest gadget. Here are ten things you need to know about the iPhone 4:

The phone boasts a stainless-steel-and-glass composition, and measures 24 percent thinner than its predecessor.

2.

The new screen has a “retina display” which increases the number of pixels fourfold. Though it sounds impressive, Jobs states that this is “a better display than the human eye can even process.”

3.

Apple has engineered a new operating system, the iOS 4, which adds 100 new features, including the much anticipated ability to multitask on the phone.

4.

The iPhone may no longer be called the die-phone by disgruntled users. It comes equipt with an A4 processor and bigger battery which both allow for more talking and browsing time.

5.

A gyroscope has been included in order to improve gaming. The audience went “crazy” over this as Jobs played Jenga.

6.

A new improved camera system takes better photos, and the camera records High Def video.

7.

The phone is equipt with a double camera enabling ”FaceTime” also known as video calling.

8.

iBooks can be purchased for, and accessed on the iPhone, and are also accessible via all of your other Apple products.

9.

The “Interactive iAds” will ensure that more apps are available for free, as  “developers earn money so they can continue to create free and low-cost apps for users.”

The new model is set to be released on June 24th, and will be reasonably priced, between 199 to $299.

The new trend in art, fashion and photography seems to center around the taboo theatrical malady known as blackface.

Once again we have come across an incident of blackface in the world of high fashion where the racially driven form of artistic expression has thrived as of late. In a spread for German magazine Stern Fotographie, Claudia Schiffer is pictured with dark foundation, a black Afro and a bewildered fashion expression, a look the undoubtedly tries to channel the image of a black woman. The shots were taken by designer-cum-photographer Karl Lagerfeld three years ago for a Dom Perignon advertisement but were not used (for good reason). Now they have resurfaced in the German magazine along with five other pictorials depicting Schiffer dressed to represent other races, historical figures and social stereotypes. According to The Daily Mail:

Claudia Schiffer has been accused of racial insensitivity after appearing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman…Representatives of the model claim the pictures are intended to show the model as a variety of fantasy figures. A spokesman said: ‘The pictures have been taken out of context. The images were designed to reflect different men’s fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and they are some of Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.’

We see no artistic or cultural value in these pictures. Rather they appear to be a mocking testimonial to how Mr. Lagerfeld sees black women. An Afro, dark skin and a bad attitude do not a black woman make. Overall we see this as poor artistic judgment.

Chris Brown has found himself deeply embroiled in scandal over the past year.

Accordingly his image has undergone a series of overhauls. Chris has been floundering while trying to find his place in the industry post-domestic abuse scandal. He was immediately vilified after details of his fight with Rihanna surfaced to the public, and lost much if the fan base that adored him for his clean cut image. He has clearly struggled to regain that respect, with several failed attempts at proving to his audience that he remains the talented kid that they once lauded.  Now it seems that Chris has given up that battle and resolved to be what he is inevitably labeled as; the industry bad boy. Lets take a look back at Chris’ image transformations. What do you think? Should he be content with being labeled as the resident good boy gone bad?

The Boy Next Door

Remember when Chris was the perfect little gentleman, singing “excuse me miss?” He was the guy that everyone thought was charming and adorable in all his bubble-gum pop glory. His boy next door image didn’t last long, but it was definitely his prime.

Hot Boy

When Chris Brown decided that it was time to grow up a little bit, he did so quite publicly. The former pop prince got a fly girl, started tackling more sensual topics in his music and revamped his image to suit his cosmopolitan, cool, almost-grown lifestyle. For the most part he remained the apple of the public eye, as the sexy up-start living the uber-glamorous lifestyle of the young, flashy and fabulous.

Domestically Violent Villain

After the Chrihannagate debacle Chris’ image fall into a downward spiral. He became a villain in the public eye. His music was banned on several radio stations, he accused some huge national  retailers of “blackballing” his album-resulting in a severe decrease in record sales, and he lost much of the following that once adored him. to make matters worse, he lacked a remorseful disposition following the incident and assumed a life-as-usual attitude that prevented him from garnering public sympathy or empathy. He was photographed jet-skiing with friends partying, and released tweets and Youtube videos of himself and his friends making light of the situation.

After the incident involving Rihanna and Chris Brown, many passed their own judgement. Even comedian Affion put in his two cents with this spoof of Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West‘s “Run This Town.” Affion cleverly titled this video “Hunt Chris Brown.” Take a look for a perfect example of how Chris was negatively viewed at the time.

Remorseful Breezy

Once Chris got in line with his PR team’s direction, his focus switched to saying sorry both to Rihanna and America. For many, though, it was too little too late. Chris attempted to regain his clean cut image by doing countless interviews and TV appearances to publicly flaunt his remorse. He clung to the the good guy image citing his slip up as a one-time-thing. He even released a few songs along these same sorry lines. Check  out the most infamous musical apology, “Crawl:”

Straight Up Bad Boy

Now it seems that Chris has given up the bow tie and the hopes of ever regaining his old image. He is owning this bad boy persona, and exploiting it. In his newest video for “No Bull***t,” Breezy sings almost explicitly about sex. He’s seen donning all black everything, dancing suggestively and claiming he’s “reaching for the condoms,” and “not stopping until 9 am.” Apparently he couldn’t care less about what anyone thinks, and is just as bad as he wants to be; no bull***t.

Sex and The City 2 is finally here and the fashion extravaganza has been stirring up buzz among the die-hard fans who have coveted the fiercely styled costumes since the series’ inauguration.

The premiere took place yesterday, appropriately in NYC, and the girls hit the red carpet dressed for a celebration. While we are all anticipating the theater opening of SATC2, we can indulge in the musing of Patricia Field, the film’s costume designer, and the woman single-handedly responsible for the fashion phenomenon that it has become.

Fields spoke candidly to NY Mag about the decisions leading up to the costume choices for the movie’s sequel. Take a look at a few of the stunning looks, as well as the reasoning behind them:

“This is in the Middle Eastern desert in a tent. In the course of this desert jaunt that they do, they have three changes, which is really funny. This, to me, is giving you Sex and the City: the hysterical. Miranda’s dress is gorgeous, by the way — that dress is an antique.
