Today we celebrate the birthday of one of music’s greatest contributors, the late, great J Dilla. A true jack of all trades, this Detroit MC, producer and composer has greatly influenced your favorite rapper whether they admit it (or even realize it) or not. Six years ago, I myself had no idea who this hip hop great was, nevermind his widespread influence, so I’ll excuse you if you need to take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with the man and his mindblowing discography. You’ll thank me later for sure, when you don’t draw a blank look on your face when your Facebook and Twitter feed are barraged by birthday shoutouts to the late great artist. The Lost XXL Interview

Four years after his death, XXL unearthed a previously unpublished interview featuring Dilla’s group Slum Village. Dilla’s responses reveal the early stages of the iconic producer’s music career, including his difficult reasoning behind leaving the group and how they often butted heads creatively, professionally and personally:

“Nah, I mean I show my crew love but as far as moving on that was like the best thing I could ever have done,” said Dilla. “It was like I said, the business situation where you not clickin’ creatively and things like that…”

At 22 years old, Zambian and self described “Afropolitan” Mazuba Kapambwe is steadily making a name for herself in the African entertainment world as a blogger, writer , and “afrosocialite.” She has conducted interviews with african celebs such as TV presenter Nonhle Thema, actor Van Vicker, Project Runway designer Korto Momolu, Producer of AFWNY Adiat Disu, model David Nso, singer Wax and many more. Everyone knows that the VMAs red carpet is the place to make a splash. Sunday night, however, the fabulously talented Beyonce Knowles did not only make a splash, she made a tidal wave. Known for being very “hush-hush” about her personal life with hubby entertainment mogul (and rapper) Jay-Z, Beyonce did one of the most unexpected things- she revealed a baby bump to the entire viewing word. That’s right; ladies and gentlemen- Beyonce and Jay-Z are expecting their first child.

Many watched on in amazement (myself included) as the songstress not only belted her tune “Love On Top” during her VMA performance, but proudly opened her sequined jacket to reveal yet again a raised bump that she caressed gleaming. Watch the video below in case you missed it.

Countless rumors have encapsulated the couple getting pregnant since their secretive nuptials, but with no confirmation, people continued to wonder with each passing month and tour date when Queen Bey (as she’s affectionately known the world over) would finally put a bun in that oven, especially with her husband knocking on 42 at the end of this year!

Finally, when Beyonce decided to take a nine-month break from touring and recording music, everyone felt that the couple was taking this time to work on making baby Carters. There is no doubt that Mr. Carter (who beamed during his wife’s belly bump unveiling) will be involved in their child’s life, but the pressure will be on Bey to lose the belly weight to get back on the road making hits and shine as bright as she ever has. This is definitely a new task for Beyonce; to not only be a role model for young girls and budding women, but to professional mothers everywhere.

Should black music incorporate politics or are artists allowed to create art simply for art’s sake? We’ve all had this discussion at one point or another. Whether you advocate for or against a fusion of the two, or haven’t yet decided where you stand, the fact that contemporary dancehall music often includes wildly homophobic lyrics must certainly have you feeling one way or another. In his article entitled Murder Music, Ilan Greenberg investigates what Jamaicans themselves have to say for the music, in addition to breaking down the origins of the genre, allowing you the reader to gain new context for your own views on this debate.

Jamaica’s dancehall music is being blamed for the country’s violent attacks on gays. But there are many who don’t see the music as homophobic, only the battle cry of a changing nation. Read part 2 of this article here.

On a breezy evening in mid-April a committee boasting some of Jamaica’s most venerable citizens convened an open-air meeting under the auspices of the department of government at the University of the West Indies. After almost a year and a half of sifting through charts and listening to old vinyl recordings, the committee co-chairmen, which included the president of Jamaica’s National Gallery and a former finance minister, presented to several hundred members of the public their list of the top one hundred Jamaican songs. Pandemonium ensued.

Audience members objected to the choice for number one song, “One Love,” Bob Marley’s sweet paean to togetherness, as being too saccharine. People jammed the open microphone to point out the under-representation of female artists. Others testily questioned why so few of the chosen top songs reflected reggae’s subversive, anti-establishment politics. Several people demanded a more transparent process. But the most passionate complaint from the crowd—which included members of the media, faculty in the university’s department of reggae studies, music industry figures, and ordinary music fans—was voiced over and over again from younger members of the audience: Where on this top one hundred list were the dancehall songs?

Dancehall is a beat-heavy, lyrically-dense, energetic, and synthesizer-driven music that has much in common with American hip-hop. It evolved in the early nineteen nineties out of the classic reggae of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff—the often feel-good, reefer-party music championing the Rastafarian visions of social justice and pan-African celebration, which had powered Jamaica to worldwide recognition in the nineteen seventies and had catapulted Jamaican musicians into the far reaches of global iconography.

Surging in popularity worldwide, dancehall acts routinely fill venues like Madison Square Garden. The biggest dancehall performers sell out their U.S. concert dates within minutes. In Japan some forty thousand fans roar to the beat of dancehall acts in a sold-out stadium concert staged every September. Dance moves pioneered by dancehall fans frequently turn up in the videos of American hip hop stars.

But dancehall is hugely controversial—inside and outside Jamaica. Detractors echo many of the same complaints voiced against American hip-hop, including that the music promotes misogyny and violence. But the brief against dancehall far exceeds criticism inveighed against any other genre of popular music. Dancehall is a crucible for Jamaica’s irreconcilable notions of class and masculinity and identity. Most of all, dancehall is accused of fomenting vicious anti-gay violence.

But none of the judges explained the paucity of dancehall in the list by citing the social upheaval, foreign disapprobation, or controversy surrounding dancehall. To explain dancehall’s under-representation on their top one hundred, judges instead invoked their own personal tastes and the need for recent music to endure the test of time. During the audience Q&A, one man in his twenties leaned forward into the microphone as if he were about to break into song himself, his hands wrapped around the lapel of his linen sports coat. “You cannot ignore dancehall,” he lectured the judges. “It is the soul of the Jamaican street. We respect our roots but it is not what is alive right now. You cannot wish us away.”

Somewhere in between “Irreplaceable” and “ Girls (Who Run the World), Beyoncé has become the face of pop feminism in the past decade. Her songs have been lauded as being empowering female anthems for their assertive lyrics. I was not there for that memo; just because she makes songs that state, “[female] persuasion can build a nation”, does not means her brand of feminism is substantial and a message that young girls should be consuming. Frankly, Beyoncé’s interpretation of feminism in her music seems to be an empty declaration of what should be: gender egalitarianism in all aspects of society. Beyoncé has done very little to contribute to bringing that dream of girls running the world to fruition. Her commitment to feminism seems to go as far as her lyrics, which are admittedly not that profound.

Her recent interview with UK Harper’s Bazaar only serves to highlight the fact that her brand of feminism is rather simplistic and is a part of a well-constructed persona that utilizes the most “basic topics of politics and social realities of womanhood”. The interviewer asked her if she was a feminist, to which she responded, “I feel like… you know… it’s, like, what I live for. 
I need to find a catchy new word for feminism, right? Like Bootylicious”. Beyoncé’s willingness to suggest that feminism needs a ubiquitous catch phrase indicates that she views it as little more than a marketing tool that she can shape to her own needs. It shows that to her feminism is something that can be watered down and mass-produced into a simple phrase for popular consumption. As put by youtuber Nineteen percent “such [minimal, stylistic] and sporadic campaigns of girl power aren’t really helping the cause. Women have made great strides but it’s a bit too early to be making victory anthems if they aren’t any shift in values and work being to done to create and support such a shift”.

LL Cool J’s girl gets kidnapped while posting anti-drug flyers on the street. LL assembles his posse who take out the bad guys (who all just so happen to be rich white guys… MESSAGE!). The video’s narrative, coupled with LL’s iconic performance scenes make this one of the best videos of the 1980s. “Gimme that walkie talkie!”

LOS ANGELES — Investigators say an autopsy on R&B singer Teena Marie revealed no signs of trauma, but it likely will be weeks before a cause of death will be determined.

Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Wednesday that toxicology tests that could determine Marie’s cause of death take about six weeks.

Winter says her body showed no signs of trauma and no illegal drugs were found in the Pasadena home where she died.

Marie, the singer of hits like “Lovergirl” who was often called the “Ivory Queen of Soul,” was found unresponsive by family members in her home on Sunday. She was 54.

Police said in a statement that the death appeared to be from natural causes.

Lauryn Hill was late to a recent show of her at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg; some fans even waited hours. But when she finally took to the stage (at midnight!) she gave an apology that didn’t sound too sincere.

“I spent my entire 20s sacrificing my life to give you love. So when I hear people complain, I don’t know what to tell you. I personally know I’m worth the wait.”

To fans that booed her, she motioned them to the exit, and told them they could get a refund.

Raz-B’s brother, who goes by the even more ridiculouser name of Ricky Romance, posted a video response to Chris Brown threatening to put a pistol in his mouth if he ever saw Brown in Los Angeles.

He hit Ricky Romance (pardon me for laughing on the inside) back with a tweet saying that he’d be in Los Angeles very soon.
